I'm around, things have been extremely busy lately... Xmas is almost here... blah blah blah... anyway... I won't be doing anything with the ripping kit/group until after Xmas, so be patient. Until then... I'm sure you've all heard the new Incubus single on the radio, it really kicks ass.

Still interested...? Well, its a thought I've been messing with for a while now... I don't have the time to run a group like this on my own.. but if the members here were to show enough interest, I'm sure I could point you in the proper direction. :huh:

Okay, you want more? Its like this... I have a ripping kit that I've been messing with, and its very easy to use, etc... it will create NFO/SFV/M3U files automatically. The kit is designed to use EAC/Lame but it also include RazorLame (a graphical frontend for Lame), QuickSFV for making/checking SFV files, CDTag for proper tagging (tag and rename is ok, but we want to be consistant and uniform), and some short tutorials.... :01: :01:Quote:

Okay, here is where things get interesting... the "scene" standard (the rules used by ripping groups) argue that mp3s are to be 192 Constant Bit Rate. Some audiofiles will argue that VBR (variable bit rate) encoding is better... personally, I have compared 'professional' rips at 192CBR and 128VBR, and IMO, VBR sucks ass.
In order to see the bigger picture, you have to understand one small detail. The 'mp3 scene' has now made a committment in 2004 to make all thier rips VBR. This includes some major groups like FNT, RNS, aPC, and more... however, instead of a low quality 128 VBR rip, they are talking about either 256 or 320 for CD quality VBR. I'm not sure if this will increase rip size, or if there is any true benefit to their new VBR rules... :ghostface:
So, uh, the rip kit is still coming.. gonna take a bit longer.. I have the new 'scene rules' but we are still working out some bugs... stay tuned... ;)

Well, so far, the file sizes are about the same. Approx 3 to 5 mb for a song. If I wasn't clear earlier, this is a different way of encoding VBR than people have been using in the past. It should have advantages over 192CBR files, and should sound much better than your basic VBR (alt-preset-standard)...
Personally, I'm not sure if I like the direction that things are heading in... but... I'm sure there will be no shortage of people downloading the songs.. VBR or CBR, people like free music. :huh:

Thanks for the excellent info., Jibbler. I''ll step ahead of things here and say 'thanks' for the time you are spending with this, as we will all benefit from it in the end.
I can hardly wait for the ripping kit - I want my entire CD collection to be consistent in quality/appearance when I rip them - not to mention all the new stuff yet to be released.
