go to www.ps2-scene.org for all the info you need.
if you're looking for a cheap chip that can read DVD-R/+R's then get the duo2se. it cost me 25 shipped. of course installing the modchip is the hard part. oh and yeah, you'll probably have to change your current ps2 laser (this reads the disk).

the best modchip imo is the crystal chip (1.1, not 1.0, 2.0 should be coming out or is out already). it has all the same features of the other chips, and it has one feature that none of them have. i forgot what it's called, but it allows you to play all ps2 games online w/o having to mess with the disk image on your computer.

Yeah if you like playing online get the crystal chip (dnas bypassing)
I use a dms3 flashed to the latest firmware. it works great for me (its the solder one). I just sent my ps2 to a modder (found him through xbox-scene forums) and had him install it.
Then my laser quit, so I had another guy replace my laser who i also found from the xbox-scene forums.
Oh, and I have a v4 ps2
It says on the Crystal Chips site that the CC 2.0 does not allow you to boot backup or burned games... why then is everyone on the ps2-scene forum so stoked over this new chip? It's HDD capabilities?Quote:

On topic though, it looks like there are alot of ecstatic people over this game, I'm pretty much foaming at the mouth already...
this game is still fucking amazing! 20 hrs in, still like it a lot. soooo many cinematics. and gorgeous cinematics too
