I Use Neuview Professional for all 720p mkv files and where possible watching footy streaming, or BsPlayer if Neuview won't play stream.
Don't need to do this if watching directly on my laptop but if watching through TV the Neuview allows me to control the brightness and contrast of picture showing on the TV.
Which no other player can do that I have found (will probably be proved wrong) as I was always having problems with White and Reds being way to bright when watching 720p mkv programmes on my Sony TV and couldn't really affect picture control through Sony's own control panel. But this has solved it nicely.
in order
1- Gom Player,
2- VLC

MPlayer with the K-Lite Codec Pack. :)

Most definitely VLC. It can pretty much play any file type that you may have video-wise. For music, it depends on preferences more than anything else.
