I have just discovered a strange grey smudge on my most recent pictures that would seem to suggest my attempt to take phoaties of a winter storm was at best ill-advised :(. Just bought a lens cleaning kit in the hope it is a stubborn bit of seagull/salt spray mix. Otherwise I may have salt blasted my lens coating. double :(

How did you get some seagull stuck on your lens?

Feeding seagulls Alka Seltzers or other dispersible medication inside chips and watching them blow up is a popliar pastime in rural Scotchland.

:( Looking like a small smudge left by internal condensation. Bummer! Doesn't impact on pictures with any real activity in them, noticed it taking a phoatie of a grey warship sitting on a blue grey sea surrounded by a grey heat haze. It would have been a striking picture but for the smudge.

You need to dry the lens out, and quickly before fungus begins to form. The best way to do this is with those packs of Silica Gel that come in packaging, you can purchase them if you don't have any lying about. The important this is that the environment needs to be dry in order to lower the condensate inside the lens. Also check for any grey spidery looking lines in the internal elements of the lens, these are fungus forming, if not you can dry out the lens yourself. The Silica Gel paks are also good to keep in your lens bag to keep the environment dry.
