The pope has officially passed away.

the next pope will pardon you snny, no worries. in the meantime we remain "popeless'". something you can tell your kids about like when jfk was shot.

What really happens is that the cardinals vote for a new pope. When they have reached a final decision the ballot papers are burned. The smoke coming out of the chimney is the first indication that the new pope has been elected. Well that is the way it used to happen. :)

actually the funeral will be within 4 days, after that all the cardinals have to travel to rome and enter what is called the conclave, there all cardinals under 80 write on a bit of paper who they want to be the next pope, you are not allowed to vote for yourself. cardinals over 80 aren't allowed to vote. then as boab rightly said they burn the ballot slips when the new pope has a certain percent of the vote and the smoke you see is from that.
