Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Getting a seedbox with u/l speed of just 1 or 2 mbps is plain waste. After all you can get those speeds from your ISP itself.

meh, you're just waiting $$$ on VPS. if you pay another $25, you can get yourself a dedicated server!

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
I'm not to good introduced to this, if you have seedbox, do you dl files at that speed directly to your PC or to seedbox, and for seedbox with your normal speed ?

seedbox - dedicated server - it's a computer somewhere on a data center, which has very good internet connection and you are using it like it's yours, just not at home. you connect to it remotly and doing whatever you want, f.e. using it for dl'ing and up'ing torrent stuff at very good speed, like 100mbps or even 1gbps (depends how much money you have to spend). when you have files on that seedbox you can download them to your home PC, ofcourse at lower speed, it depends what connection you have at home...
p.s. sorry for my english, i did my best :yup:
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
So, basicly, I still have my crapy connection to dl at home ?
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
yep. it'll just help you to build up ratios regardless of your crappy connections. and also you can leech the files later on at your own discretion from the seedbox.

What do you guys think:
Intel core2DUO 6300
2GB RAM DDR2
400GB HDD 7200
1Gbit port - full duplex (100Mbit average , 1Gig burstable)
Unmetered transfer

well for unmetered and burstable its a good deal, i just wonder how big and how good their network is and if the servers are dedicated or on a shared network.

VPS is a dedicated server which is SHARED by x amount of users. with a dedi server, it only has YOU as its user. whereas with a VPS, there are other users using the same server.
in addition, everything is shared among all those users - HDD, bandwidth, etc. i wouldn't go for a VPS because for as cheap as $40, you can get yourself a cheap dedi running Linux (Windows OS always cost extra $$$)...

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
ok, i have my VPS up and running (thanks to sooti), and im very impressed...
butt, i want more.
i want windows so i can use utorrent to save RAM and CPU and to use RSS and webui among other things.
can anyone recommend me a good, pretty cheap, dedicated server that runs windows.
currently im paying $25 a month(probably will only do a month or two until i can get a windows server) for AMD 64 Athlon 3400+ Equal Share, RAM 512MB, HDD 20GB, 100Mbps Unmetered Shared, Fedora Core 6 x86_64, 100Mbps unmetered.
between $25(haha, yeh right) and $50 would be excellent.
or if someone wants to share one, that would work too.

does your VPS have X support or a vnc server access ? If so, you can run utorrent by wine. I used to do so in my box.

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
i'm not sure, i'll have to look.
doesn't wine take up alot of memory?
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Why is this no longer a sticky post?
It's such a great thread, and very helpful. I'd hate for it to get lost in the shuffle.

I never had memory problems with wine and I am running linux on 128MB RAM (256MB sometimes) :D
EDiT: BTW please make this thread sticky, OR atleast the first post. It's really helpful

the cheapest you can go + REAL, QUALITY 100Mbit line (unlike DediBox, for example) is:

EverCase ECR9130
AMD Sempron 3100+
512 MB DDR Memory
1 x 160 GB SATA HD
2000GB Volume datatraffic
IP (2)
APC Remote Reboot (1 port)
Debian 3.1 or CentOS 4.4
Euro 49,00 / month
No setup fee
currently doing 5mb/s+ on ScT... not bad...
EDIT: i added $15/mo for Windows...
share it with somebody else and split the cost, bandwidth, HDD, etc. in half...

eh ive got the 20gig at leeware and i just start over fresh every night usually, meaning delete all the torrents from last nights shows to clear out for the next nights
however thats not exactly ideal >_< i wanna get a lw but dont want windows :/
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
yeh, i would do that, but the main thing i host is big files that usually have alot of leechers and not many seeders, so i'd like to be able to keep it up longer than a day.
and i just like utorrent better than torrentflux, i'm just more used to it and it has the RSS option.
