when I put a url for a picture in my avatar or signature some times they work sometimes they dont. They give a square with a small red cross in the corner.
why is this ?
how do I remedy this ? :)
small red cross in the corner?
i get the clear box with a red x.
Some sites don't allow hotlinking to their images. If you find an picture that you want to use, but can't get it to work, then use your own host for it.Quote:

Why, when I try to upload a .gif as an avatar, am I being told it's not a valid file extention?!? http://members.shaw.ca/wenpigsfly/smileys/wtf.gif
Before anyone starts flaming me, I HAVE :rtfm: !!
Please help!!!!
Maybe it is not a real gif (aka renamed from jpg to gif) and the server does notice that it is no gif. Many servers are set that you cant just rename a file cause it could contain code.
Just an idea since my servers for example are set this way for security reasons
Could be that the file name is something like this:
And the board will read it as an .avatar file (not valid)Code:http://www.site.com/my.avatar.gif
Fancy posting the URL for Your avatar?
BOT
considering you're already over the avatar/sig size limits, is adding another image a good idea?

why not try to tell me how to use that gif as an avatar?
Explain your prob in detail...
Upload your image to another host.
I go into "My Controls", click on "edit avatar settings", & where it says "Enter a URL to an online avatar image", I paste -Quote:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...20/revpud2.gif (I have tried many others too), the next page displays the message:
Hope that is enough info for youQuote:
Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.
The error returned was:
Sorry, that is not a valid file extension
:)
How can it work if you have exceeded your daily usage limit ?
I have tried SigX, Village Photos & at least one other, none seem to work!Quote:
Upload your image to another host.
If it's showing up as a sig, why not as an avatar?
It's not showing. All I see is a red x and 'user posted image'.
Try: http://galleries.vinyamar.com/ps/
Bear in mind that I don't know a lot about image manipulation, but the only way I can think of to solve your problem is to make the filesize of each frame of animation smaller. You can do this by putting each frame through Photoshop 'save for web' function, then recompiling the animation with the smaller filesizes. This won't make the image smaller, just the filesize.
You'll lose a bit of the quality, but that's not likely to be a problem when it's as small as that.
Upload here & see what happens...
http://www.chinkii.com
or
http://www.7host.com
or
http://www.daikatan.org
It doesnt show up as sig - you reached your daily bandwidth so no image is displayed. Maybe you see it cause it's in your cache but we don't see it due your bandwidth overusage.
Try uploadit.org
BTW, have you tried http://www.chinkii.com for your avatar hosting? They seem OK :)
Quoting [B][O][T]'s avatar and signiture guide:
You have to add &ext=.jpg | &ext=.gif | &ext=.png etc. after the URL to make it work.
or simpler: use some other hostCode:http://galleries.vinyamar.com/ps/show.php?id=AY4MmmXGTQdCrUdWuGSThnf&ext=.gif
Right.
I've removed my sigs, uploaded it to http://www.chinkii.com/ & still I get the same error message :(
DSoesn't work with uploadit.org either :( :(
email me the pic n i'll give u the url...
Seems to work OK for me. Here's the URL http://www.chinkii.com/uploads/album/misc/revpud2.gif
I'll replace my avatar with my own avatar (I'm not trying to steal yours) just seeing if it works. Can you see it?
I can see it if that helps.Quote:

yes Ive had problems liek this before
Guys
Thanks for all your help, after sleeping on it, I thought I'd try IE rather than Opera, & guess what!
Must be an issue with Opera :(
Thanks all though
@Zacspeed: Your avatar still isn't working above your name, don't know if you realized that? Anyway, back to URLs; it doesn't matter which one you use, because the image is on the server. I uploaded your avatar to Chinkii.com, so it's already there. Just use the URL I posted above :)
I think you might be right that it's an Opera issue, I can't see anything that you might be doing wrong. I'll turn my/your avatar back to blank now. To see whether it's working for you, delete your temporary internet files and clear your history, then you should see what other people see. Good luck.
check your adress boss you have http://http//www.uploadit.org/files/061003-revpud1.gif, you need to remove one of the http boss you got too many nothing to do opera, i use opera with no problems such as thesehttp://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/r/sgrin.gifhttp://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/b/smiley2k.gifhttp://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/2/salook.gifQuote:

 I reckon you're absolutely right, Muscleman. Didn't notice that. Zacspeed obviously just pasted the URL straight into the box without clearing it first.
Well spotted :)
