If the defender had been covered in razor blades then I guarantee the Italian would not have got a scratch cos he'd have stepped over him.
Pish. It's not his job to jump over the defender, if he's running along and the defender gets in his way, by sliding into him along the ground that's the defender's fault.
The fact that he could have avoided the defender is neither here nor there.
It was poor defending which led to the goal, not cheating by the Italian.
Yep, agree it was poor defending, which gave the Italian the option of cheating or going around him, but by purposely crashing into him is cheating, at worst the Aussie defender could've been done for obstruction which would be an indirect free kick, not a penalty.
ps, the defender did NOT slide into him.

He didn't cheat, the Aussie defender made an arse of it and gave away the penalty. If you agree it was a foul, then it was a penalty. There is no way it could be described as "obstruction.
If an attacker is running and the defender throws himself, on the ground, in front of him, the attacker does not have to jump, or break his stride. He is perfectly entitled to keep running. If that results in a penalty it's the defender's fault.
Watch Michael Owen, he's really good at it.

Nope, it was NOT a foul, how could it be, the defender did NOT foul him, the striker decided to get a penalty by crashing into him.
Michael Owen is very good at doing this I agree but, if he was pulled up for it then I couldn't disagree with the ref.(reckon we'll agree on this? lol)

:no2:
It's not your fault you don't really understand the rules. I'm sure you still enjoy the game though.
Re: FIFA World Cup 2006 - Germany
A poll is needed to decide if he understands the rules or not.
