Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
Changing Lanes- Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson.
A minor fender bender brings two men to the brink of self destruction.
A wonderful, character driven film- as I recall, Jackson got most of the press when this came out (and he is predictably good) but Affleck deserves equal credit.
Reminded me of Michael Clayton, another film I enjoyed recently.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
Gone Baby Gone- Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman.
Two Boston detectives (Affleck and Monoghan) investigate the abduction of a little girl.
Based upon the book by Dennis Lehane (an author I like) and directed by Ben Affleck (an actor I mostly like), I was primed to enjoy this film...sadly, I did not.
This film is the poster boy for bad casting choices.
Not for one second did I believe that Affleck and Monoghan were detectives- college seniors maybe, but definitely NOT the kind of hardboiled detectives capable of some the actions they take or- even more critically- the decision that must be made at the movie's end.
Too bad and better luck next time Ben.

*Gone Baby Gone is the fourth in a series about this pair by author Lehane.
In the books it's made abundantly clear that they are lightweight investigators, specializing in skip tracing, collections, etc. and not heavy duty Sam Spade types. They bumble their way into serious crimes.
Unfortunately, the movie glosses right over this and we have these two baby faced kids being treated as equals by the police detectives assigned to this high profile case.

Canorous: Richly melodious; tuneful
Odd choice of adjectives.
Se7en- Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey.
A dark and grimy noir thriller featuring yet another incredibly inventive and focused serial killer*.
It almost pulls it off.
I have two problems with this film- one major, one minor- both deal breakers.
Firstly, I don't think Pitt is the equal of the rest of the cast. Especially at the ending's "big reveal", he just didn't convince me. This may have been a fault of the editing, intercutting between Spacey and Freeman- both of whom can speak volumes with complete stillness- leaves Pitt exposed as the lightweight of the trio.
The second is a minor but very irritating technical slip.
The whole look of the movie is dark, decayed and most of all, wet.
It's always raining in this unnamed city.
Unfortunately, in several exterior shots there is obvious sunshine in the backround while the foreground is drowning. Just like "winter" scenes where you don't see anyone's breath, this small detail jars me out of the story and makes me concentrate on the mechanics of filmmaking...not a good thing.
*
Spoiler:
Show
OK, I wasn't going to do this but sorry, can't resist...
There is gaping hole in plot logic at the ending. The finale rushes by so quickly that this doesn't stand out but within five minutes of finishing I went "Hey, wait a minute..."
The serial killer John Doe (Spacey) has just raped, killed and decapitated Mill's wife (Paltrow), then walks into the police station literally covered in fresh, dripping blood.
In the final scene in the desert, Paltrow's head is delivered in a box by an unsuspecting courier.
How did Doe arrange this?
Imagine the scene...a demented killer, slathered in gore, walks into a delivery service carrying a box- which is inexplicably pristine by the way- and asks for it to be delivered to the middle of nowhere at a very specific time. He pays $500 and ambles out.
No one thinks this odd.
That's one tough city.
Also,
Let's talk about the mastermind serial killer genre a bit, shall we?
Yeah, I get it- they're nuts and totally focused but shit, give me a break, do they have time machines too?
When Pitt and Freeman find John Doe's lair- and don't they all have such elaborate hidey holes too?- one of the things they find is two thousand- 2000!- handmade, incredibly dense notebooks...the killer's mind made readable.
In the DVD extras there is a whole clip devoted to producing just the few pages that are shown onscreen.
It took two guys months to make just these props and yet the "killer" supposedly spews out 2000 of 'em.
At the same time he's also masterminding incredibly elaborate death scenarios- one of which takes a year to complete.
Yet, when caught, John Doe appears well fed and rested...pretty normal actually.
His productivity and dedication make me feel like a total slacker.
Makes me wish I was just a little batshit crazy so I could get more done.

Pleasantville- Tobey Maguire, Jeff Daniels, Reese Witherspoon.
A charming fantasy about two modern teens inserted into a 1950's black and white TV show.
Gee gosh, I enjoyed it.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
I agree clocker(if you couldn't tell by my user details) but like The Truman Show (another movie about someone living in a fantasy town) for me it kind of fizzled out at the end.
I think it's very hard to wrap up stories like these satisfactorily. You essentially are forced to destroy what you loved about the places to find some resolution.
Really enjoyed the ride while it lasted though and William H Macy and Joan Allen's characters are clearly the heart of the story.
