When any Americans says it it's out of respect, "No ma'am" or "Yes ma'am." (what's with the w in maawm?)
Not, "My ma'am is going to buy me a PS3" or "Did you talk to your ma'am about the trip?"
It's simply about being polite and respectful to a woman and not another word for mother.
I don't get the rough one. We all say that word and my supervisor says warsh.
