Wolfenstein 3D was before Doom.

My favourite is probably Quake 1 with Doom 2 close second. Most FPS games after Quake are too slow and don't have superior playablity like Quake does with rocket jumps and crazy air movement maneuvers. In Quake you can really fly through the map and own if you have the skills. :)
