What I mean was, when it started there were fighters from different disciplines, competing against each other, which is why it was Mixed Martial Arts. Now people don't necessarily train in something like Ju Jitsu, they train specifically for this type of competition.
This "type of competition" involves ju jitsu, karate, wrestling, etc. Again, it's mixed martial arts.
Do you mean that fighters used to have one specialty like karate, whereas now they are still a specialist in karate, but well round in other fighting styles as well?
If so, that was just phased out by default. Fighters were forced to learn other disciplines to survive. I still like to watch great fights like in the last UFC. Couture is a world champion in Greco Roman Wrestling, against Silvia who is mainly a boxer.

Skizo is 100% right, the mastery of techniques are astounding. And then having the right frame of mind to effectively utilize it while getting pressured in the octagon [or ring] is amazing. All that and putting on a great show, don't knock it until ya try it. It is much harder than it seems.
