Well, various forums and websites usually help, but I don't really listen to new music, unless it's from an old band or such.
Friends can sometimes help, but it's usually something i've already heard.
I'd reccommend searching for decent forums/websites for your new music though. :)
RollingStones, Metacritic, Pitchfork, Pandora, friends, etc.
Last.fm, forum recommendations, watching films, reading books, etc.
