Saddam seized in raid near Tikrit

After nine months on the run, U.S. soldiers captured Saddam Hussein in a raid on December 13, 2003. The once-defiant Iraqi leader was captured without a shot being fired near a compound of ramshackle buildings outside his ancestral hometown of Tikrit. He was found in a ventilated "spider hole" six to eight feet underground, its entrance camouflaged with bricks and dirt.
