1) remote desktop is for connecting to windows remotely.... for linux u can use putty which is a ssh client for windows ......
2) utorrent is mainly for windows but u can use it on linux with the help of wine....
3)linux is much much more stable than windows
and last of all it takes sometime to get used to linux and once u get used to it ....there is no going back to windows as in my case

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
aww, why did this get unstickied?

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
for all the seedbox newbies, i HIGHLY suggest you save yourself from all the trouble and just go ahead and pay the extra $15-$25/mo for Windows OS!

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Just popping in to say thanks to the threadsarter! The info has been invaluable and I checked this thread over and over. I finally got my box setup and working properly after spending quite a bit of time looking into it and picking a host company for a dedicated server. After using my home connection for torrents the dedicated box speed pretty much made eyes pop out! I did follow the advice about spending a bit extra for Windows server. I'm using that plus uTorrent and it's working like magic :-)
Only problem now is that I'm getting impatient with the speed of downloading from the server to my home pc through FTP...;-) It's still fast but not after watching the torrents scream up and down on the seedbox....
I eded up with a "cheapish" server. P4, 1GB ram, 3TB bandwidth per month on a 100Mbps connection. The only thing I don't like is the small (80GB) HDD.
As tempting as some of the "umetered" deals were, it's a matter of them being a little too good to be true. My advice...Read the small print! Some of them explicitly say that they will restrict you if you use too much even if they sell you on "unmetered". At least with a monthly bandwidth type of deal, you know exactly what you will get and what it will cost you if you go over the limit. Your connection will also be very good and not as random seeming as the unmetered connections.

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
I'm giving bestofdata.com (reseller for dedibox) a shot right now and hope that it goes smoothly. I have heard that they will cancel service if you are over 25mbps 24/7, so I'll be watching that closely.
I gave valueserver.de a shot and was not very impressed. Their technical support was awful and, to make matters worse, I was never provided a password for mysqladmin that would have allowed me to add databases. As such, I could not install torrentflux.
By the way, I think some people need to make the distinction between "mbps" and "MBps". These are two very different things ;)
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Yes, a difference of 8X. "b"=bit, "B"=byte. The unmetered packages will not, well I suppose one can't say never, give you the spped that you think you are going to get and if you do start to use up too much of the shared line, they'll put the brakes on you. If a deal says 10mbps unmetered, it sounds good and a 100 sounds even better. Better than a home connection but you'll probably never see that speed and if you do happen to get on an "undersold" connection and get good speed, you won't have it for long.

I certainly am not foolish enough to think I can easily achieve 100mbps for $50 a month. :P
I get throttled quite heavily by my current ISP if I exceed 70GB of traffic in a 30 day period. A cheap seedbox is a great way for me to maintain good ratio on the many trackers I visit while still allowing normal home usage. Speed is not as much of a concern as traffic is.

Maybe that new technology coming can speed up connections for torrents even if they said its only for gaming.

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
I just ordered this from Hosting-IE and will give them a try for one month:
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gifIntel P4. 1700 MHZ (64bit ready)
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif 60 GB ofHDD disk
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif 512 MB of RAM
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif Traffic-Unlimited (guaranteed)
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif 100Mbit Switch Port
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif Monitoring 14 Port's
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif RemoteConsole
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif PLESK 8 (info)
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif Managed firewall
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif Operation System *
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif Monthly Payment
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif 78 € Setup Fee
http://hosting-ie.com/images/arr.gif 39 € Per Month
They're cheaper than DediBox (excluding the one-time setup fee) but if I can get anywhere from 1-3MB/s I'd be happy with it. That, and good routing to the US ('cos with DediBox, I get around 10-15kB/s FTP'ing to and from).

I got my hosting-ie server, it's my first windows server, i have to say windows is amazing to use vs linux, yes linux is free and windows almost always cost money (except this time i got it free), speeds aint bad for VPS, upload 2-3mb/s on avrage upload, download i got up to 6mb/s... nice thing is u can install any p2p on it, incl DC or emule, etc... anyway if u have 20-100 euros, i say go for hosting-ie.. leeware is still nice and cheap but hosting-ie has much more options...

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Slightly off topic but still related...
What bittorrent clients are people running on their seedboxes?

if ur going to run w2k3 server stick with utorrent. less resources. dont install firefox or any browsers. stick to what you need that will run least resources.
i run.. utorrent, winrar, dumeter and serv-u on my server. thats all thats installed.
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
AFAIK most people use TorrentFlux if its running Linux, or uTorrent if its Windows.
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Just got my seedbox from Layeredtech. It is great! I am on a 1000mbps port speed:D
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
i've got my windows seedbox set up and running, but now im trying to FTP back to my computer.
i'm running serv-u on the seedbox, but can only get speeds of 8kb/s MAX download off of it.
any suggestions?
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
Try changing FTPd's, Serv-U is terrible for speed. Try RaidenFTPD, or if you are cluey, ioFTPD (harder to setup). Also don't use a normal port... use a random one, they usually work better.
Also, when I am seeding extremely fast on my seedbox, FTP downloads are pathetic, like 10-20KB/s, but when I pause the seeding I get my full speed.
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
If you got a foreign seedbox speeds generally are slower to the US. Try using filezilla which gives you multi connections and downloads. On my seedbox I usually download max at 100KB on a single file, so I download 5 at a time and get 100KB on each, for a total of 500KB, just a suggestion.
-
Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
all i need/want is 100-150kb/s, thats all i get on my home line anyway.
i'll try another server.
also, i read somewhere to open the port.
is that opening the port on the server or on the computer im d/ling to?
[EDIT]ok, i d/ling and got filezilla working, but i'm still only getting like 13kB/s up even with nothing else using the servers bandwidth.
anything else i can do? [/EDIT]

Re: BT Dedicated Server/Seedbox
horrible experience with hosting-ie.com. They told me it takes 10 business days for them to set up a dedicated server. I told them that paying 80/euro set up fee I should be getting one within 24/48 hrs. I requested a refund and they refused even though I never received my server and they offer 30 day money back guarantee on their website. Going with vectoral hopefully they give a better experience. for 5 bux a month more you get an extra 500GB transfer going from spyro to renacu atm.

I have heard some horror stories about vectoral having some setup time problems also.
