The purgatory idea is stolen. Basically the idea is that since all the characters seem to have sinned in some way or another, the island is a purgatory where they were sent to atone.
Yes, the ship part would explain why the island is on no maps and also why no rescue mission have picked them up; since it's constantly moving.
