BF series has some pretty good online play
Well, on PC - I've played CS : S (Counter-Strike Source)
On console, I'd have to say Call of Duty 4 ^___^

For one that's still active: Cs 1.6 . I've played both CSS and CS 1.6 extensively and competitively. I prefer the gameplay and maps in 1.6 .
My all time favorite online game would be Socom 1 on the PS2. As it is no longer very active, it isn't worth recommending. But at its peak, it was definitely the best.
