I'm missing something here but isn't requiring staff or a VIP to invite you sort of "needing serious connections"?

Well that depends, I don't take staff or VIPs anywhere very seriously... so I wouldn't rank it as a serious connection.

It's like that more or less on every closed tracker.

I'd advice against joining IRC and begging staff for invites. I'm pretty sure they won't see that activity on a positive light, just like you wouldn't like it if someone came from nowhere and PMed you to get invites to a tracker.
