I 100% would rather dl unrar'd files from reputable sources. That said. I have, in the past... had unrar'd files which have become corrupt for whatever reason. I have never had a rar become corrupt.

Rars make next to no difference to pre times - on the fly unraring <1 second.
On home machine use XBMC or VLC.
Storage is cheap, why is there a problem unraring?
