True, Defender is good enough, even if you can't turn it off without resorting to group policies. I'm surprised antivirus companies haven't sued Microsoft over bundling it with Windows yet.Quote:

I'll recommend Eset Nod32 antivirus.

I have used Bitdefender & Kaspersky for a while. Its detection rate is pretty good.
A lot of them slow your machine down. I just use defender and then scan with Malwarebytes ah hoc.
Windows Defender should honestly be enough, I think for the most part the user's behaviour is responsible if they are infected, if you keep your eyes open and act cautiously I think there shouldn't be any problems
Windows Defender will still do scheduled quick scans, autoupdates and event traces even when supposedly disabled. Here's how to kill it for good if you don't need it.

I have been using Avast free for decades combined with Zone Alarm free and as far as I know I have never been hacked. Of course I set all connections to public for added security and retraining Zone Alarm every couple of years is a little annoying as I usually do a system reinstall when windows starts crashing or getting slow. And finally I have No Script set up in my browser.
