Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
The Princess Bride
well after reading some great reviews I decided to watch it. IMO it's a bit overrated at IMDB. That's not to say it sucks, I enjoyed it. It had its funny parts, the fencing was not that bad at all and Peter Falk brought something different to it but I wouldn't give it more than 7.0-7.5/10.

Directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Great Expectations). Movie cover, sadly, describes it all. It is nothing more than that. It isn’t even that. Direction is good, but the story goes nowhere. No interesting questions are answered. The film is not interested in truth, but only distortion and violence.
Very big disappointment.

2001: A Space Odyssey.
Treated myself to a Blu-Ray player for my b-day on Friday and I knew I had to watch this baby in 1080p.
Needless to say it was an amazing experience. My favorite movie ever was even better in HD!

Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
The Brothers Bloom- Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, Mark Ruffalo. Directed by Rian Johnson (Brick).
I am officially in love with Rachel Weisz.
A modern version of The Sting with more uncertainty and a bigger emotional payoff.
A great supporting cast, including Robbie Coltrane and Rinko Kikuchi.
One of the most enjoyable films I've seen in a long while, I don't understand why this movie didn't get a wider release.
Hunt it down and watch it.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
Public Enemies- Johnny Depp, Christian Bale.
The early 1930's were the heyday of classic American crime with Bonny and Clyde, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and most notably, John Dillinger all running wild at the same time.
Public Enemies focuses on Dillinger and has an outstanding cast, exquisitely detailed period sets (even using one of Dillinger's actual cars) and an intrinsically fascinating story.
I was bored to death, and I blame director Michael Mann.
Heavy handed and striving for his trademark epic sweep, Mann fails to evoke any interest in a cast of characters all larger than life.
I don't know exactly why I was so disappointed except to compare Public Enemies to what I consider to be the gold standard of gangster flicks...Goodfellas.
In Goodfellas, Scorcese made it obvious why the criminals wanted- or had- to be what they were....it was fun and the perks were enormous.
The rewards outweighed the risks.
None of that is made clear in Public Enemies, where neither the devastation of the Great Depression or the lure of an easy lifestyle is ever shown.
Being a bank robber looks as boring as being a milkman with the added downside of violent death.
Where's the attraction?
It's too bad.
The combination of Bale and Depp should have been epic but for me, it was simply OK and that's just not good enough.

Stunning, touching yet not pathetic story. Great direction. Even better photography... Philip Noyce (Dead Calm...) made this film very good.

Mann was trying to show that Dillinger wasn't in love with the danger but rather he was in love with the idea of being famous.
He erred badly though because this kind of film demanded that he should have been as in your face with the characters as he was with the action.Keeping them distant from the audience was a ridiculous directorial choice and allowed no empathy from the audience whatsoever.
Depp was still pretty good though.

Everyone was pretty good, the movie should have been great.
I fear for Christian Bale- he's become the go-to actor for steely-eyed, gravel voiced characters (the kind of guy who has great screen presence but in real life would scare you shitless) and his range seems to be contracting instead of growing.
I was also disappointed with the liberties that Mann took with historical fact.
IRL, Hoover was so jealous of Purvis that he drove him out of the FBI a year after Dillinger died.
In the movie Purvis is a lapdog, which eliminated a whole avenue of drama that might have humanized the FBI and raised them above the soulless- but basically incompetent- hunting machine that Mann presented.
For me, Public Enemies stands as the poster child for over-hyped movies, even above Transformers 2 or Terminator: Salvation.
The latter didn't pretend to be anything but summer popcorn flicks (BAM! BOOBS!) while PE strove to be The Godfather and hardly measures up to the third sequel.

The Girl Next door was so lame. I had high expectations from this crappy movie.
In my case I was just angry.
The last movie I watched is District 9. (downloaded it)
I liked it, so I will get the Blu-Ray.
The Last Movie I paid for (go to the theater) Lord of the Rings (the first part) I think its been almost 10 years now.
How much is a movie ticket now? 20 bucks? LOL

I watched pretty woman for the first time, yesterday. oh my god I loved it. it's just so lovely and funny. I've always dismissed it, regarding it as a crappy chickflick (which I guess is true?) but I actually really enjoyed it. in the opera scene, I just LOVE it when julia roberts smiles. I'm not really a fan of hers, but that smile melted my heart a little bit. so adorable. and richard gere's eyes... WHERE ARE THEY? does he have any? so fascinating!
so yeah. I'm a fan. straight, too! unbelievable, I know.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched?
I Sell The Dead- Dominic Monighan, Ron Perlman, Larry Fessenden.
Fitfully amusing tale of a pair of graverobbers (Monighan & Fessenden) and their encounters with the dead and not-so-dead.
Clearly made on a shoestring budget, IRTD relies more on atmospherics than special effects...think old time Hammer Films instead of Rob Zombie.
Told in a series of flashbacks as Arthur Blake (Monighan) awaits the guillotine, the different episodes vary widely in quality/mood...I wonder if the film was shot over a period of time instead of all at once.
Oh well, doesn't matter...the movie doesn't take itself seriously and neither do I, although I do have to marvel that such a low rent project could somehow ensnare two actors like Perlman and Monighan.
Indy cred, FTW, I suppose.
