Primer is a head-fuck and a half.
The whole film is deceptively fluent in solid theoretical science. It really pushes paradox to its' logical/illogical extremes. Most Hollywood time-travel capers focus on one facet of the concept and play that fiddle 'til the end. Primers explores (or at least alludes to) every possible sequence of events having been played out within given parameters.
It also leaves the question... 'What happens when you put one of those boxes inside another, bigger one of those boxes'? :blink:

Just a note about my comment re: Primer's budget...don't let that put you off.
I recently saw The Time Machine (the newest version), which had a typical Hollywood budget and thus, a very impressive and beautiful machine to stare at (in a steampunk, Victorian age kinda way).
The Time Machine sucked, despite the budget.
In Primer, the actual chamber is just duct tape and cardboard (in a U-Store-It complex, no less!) but you don't notice or care, they make it seem totally rational and believable.
In fact, a more elaborate chamber would have detracted from the film.

I had to watch it twice just to get a clue and still have only a tenuous grip on the whole plotline.
There is a forum devoted to unraveling the timeline but I'm not that devoted.
Still, a very interesting flick.

The Man Who Wasn't There- Perfectly nuanced film noir homage from the Coen brothers, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Francis McDormand.
A practically unheralded film from the famous brothers (I wasn't aware of it at all), this black and white confection could have been filmed in the 50's if it wasn't for the odd humor and flying saucers.
Thornton- and everyone else for that matter- smokes very expressively.
Definitely worth a look.

City of Industry- Harvey Keitel and Stephen Dorff.
Keitel plays the wronged survivor of a robbery doublecross.
Dorff- possibly the greatest living player of douchbag heavies- is the guy who done Harvey wrong.
Many people get shot and Lucy Liu flashes some bewbage.
Although rather formulaic (I mean come on, as soon as Dorff shows up you just know things are going to hell...), the film is well put together and acted.
Not a bad way to kill a few hours.

The New Guy and Evolution.
The New Guy stars DJ Qualls ( I was watching The Core on TV and Qualls' nose caught my attention. Looked him up and came upon this flic...) and (among others) Zooey Deschanel (whom I find disturbingly irresistable) in a somewhat predictable "teen movie". But-and this is a big qualifier- DJ is very charismatic and likeable and the humor is a step above the usual suspects.
I mean really, he does a great George C. Scott as Patton imitation, which is not the reference you'd expect in a film like this.
Plus, there's Zooey.
Evolution- David Duchovney, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott and Marianne Moore.
Directed by Ivan Reitman, so think Ghostbusters and you've got the recipe.
A trifle, but then again, must everything be GREAT?
Summer entertainment... a beach book for the eyes.
Now, both these films have something in common...anyone care to venture a guess?

The only thing that I can think of is that Qualls and Scott were both in Road Trip but I know I'm really stretching.Hope that you'll reveal the answer soon clocker I'm curious to know.

Well, since this thread is hardly a hotbed of activity and I doubt that anyone else will guess, there's no point in prolonging the suspense.
The song Play That Funky Music, White Boy is featured in both films.
Much like Zooey Deschanel it's a guilty pleasure of mine and to hear it in two unrelated films in two days was striking.
On a unrelated note...
I just got a special edition of Citizen Kane which included as a special feature a documentary called The Battle Over Citizen Kane.
No need to comment on the film itself but the documentary was absolutely amazing, adding an extra richness when appreciating what many consider to be the greatest film ever.
Highly recommended.
