True Grit - 1969 Vs 2010
watched both films back to back. i'd have to say i prefer the '69 version better. it had A LOT more character to it than the 2010 model. the beginning of the 2010 and the ending are different from the '69 version and while i think the 2010 one worked out a little better at the end u do miss out on story from the '69 one in the beginning. the ending in 2010 also elaborates more toward the very end and i didn't find that terribly wrong. u get to see what has come of everyone and that's nice.
i also found that the cinematography was better in '69 opposed to 2010 as well. u get a lot of panned out shots in '69 and u get a feel of where they're at more so than 2010. 2010 was a big disappointment in this department, but all the close up shots makes u feel a little claustrophobic.
the '69 version playing in at 2 hours while the 2010 one lasted around 1:45 hours. both a decent watch and i'd recommend watching the older one first for comparison sakes.
for myself i'm not good at judging score for an older movie for new age tech has spoiled me. so, i'd say i'd give the 2010 True Grit a 6/10 and i believe the 1969 True Grit was the better film giving it around 7/10.
either way, both a good watch for western lovers!

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
What about us non-Western fans nails? Is there enough cleavage, loud bangs and explosions to keep us ADD riddled infants entertained?
I watched Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night. It's a film about a blind clockmaker who lost a son in the war and made a clock of which the second hand is going backwards. Shortly after the installment of the clock, a baby is born with old age and his physical age reverses like that of the clock. We go through the life of the boy through a diary he wrote.
Spoiler:
Show
I quite enjoyed the film, you will notice a lot of clocks throughout the film. One scene I found, was when the Russian sailor asked Benjamin if he ever got laid he spun the boat wheel backwards when Benjamin said no. We then see them both in a brothel.
Anyone understand the point of the scenes where Mr. Daws keeps telling Benjamin; "Did I ever tell you I been struck by lightning seven times?"

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
A somewhat Gentle Man
A Norwegian movie about a killer who's released from prison and has troubles to start a new life again. Though the movie has its lengths there are some hilariously bizarre scenes, e.g. when he's nailing his landlady...

What, Pixar has a new movie I haven't heard about?
Going the Distance- Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Christina Applegate.
A predictable rom-com that rises above expectations because of the chemistry between Long and Barrymore and some surprise supporting bits from Kristin Schaal and Jim Gaffigan.
There are a couple of laugh out loud scenes- particularly Barrymore's drunken darts/bar rant- that were better than expected also.
Going the Distance is pleasant enough but hardly memorable and I was left thinking that Barrymore could be great in a truly excellent comedy.
I hope she gets the chance.

I liked both of them, but I must say that the old one had a lot more humorous quotes in it. The new one just didn't make me laugh nearly as much as the old one. Still, it was worth the drive to go see it in the only theatre near here actually playing it.

Started watching that last Friday - not done with it yet.
Thinking about vacation time to finish...I hate to give up on things, y'know.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Tomorrow, When The War Began; watched it the day before yesterday (I might add I've read the first three books).
My father watched it too and said it reminded him a lot of a movie from the 70s called Red Dawn.
I actually liked this movie, didn't think it was a great movie, but an ok movie may be because I was expecting
to be quite disappointed before watching it, besides, the book wasn't that great either.
also watched 'Flipped' yesterday (for the 2nd time), now that is making a good movie!
a feel good movie some people call it, if you liked The Wonder Years you should love this movie
about a girl that loves this kind from the first time she saw him, but the kid pays no mind to her until
it is almost too late. The story is set in suburban US in the early 60s.\

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
+1 for Flipped, truly a good film.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Watched Due Date for the 2nd time yesterday...
IT'S A GOD-DAMN FUNNY-ASS SUPERCALIFRAGELICIOUSEXPAWHATEVER MOVIE!
That explains it, trust me. :)

Dinner for Shmucks (2010)
I am pretty disappointed with this film. The actual dinner scene lasts only about 20 minutes of the 2hrs you'll spend watching it and the too many other scenes have little development. The only two good things about this movie in my opinion are: it never gets boring and paul rudd's acting.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
The Punisher (2004). About a cop who goes undercover and during a underground takedown some big crime lord's (Howard Saint) son dies. The crime lord goes and kills The Punisher's family, the Punisher seeks revenge. How cliche? In fact I feel sorry for Howard Saint, his son was murdered and he goes and seeks revenge. When The Punisher does it he's portrayed as being heroic.
The Punisher even fucks around with Howard Saint's business and then wonders why people are after him.
Is the Punisher super human or something? He clearly got shot about 7 times throughout the film and all he does is limps a bit, gets up and starts running.
Acting was a joke - 4/10

Although The Punisher is very much intended to be an anti-hero , the established, discernible difference between his and Howard Saint's need for revenge( and therefore presumably the audience's directed sympathy) is that in the case of Saint's sons death it was an accident and even then not at the hand of Frank Castle . Saint on the other hand , encouraged by his wife, purposely set out to slaughter all of Castle's family.
As for initially being shot I think the mysterious Black guy is suppose to be a shaman or something.
Anyway ,for me another big problem with the movie is that as an actor , Thomas Jane just isn't appealing or charismatic enough to want you to cheer for him.
There have been far less sympathetic central characters( even truly evil ones with as little plot as here to support them) in film that you end up rooting for.
All in all a 4 would be about right except for the fact that Travolta dies in which case I give it a 9 .
If he was killed sooner it would be a solid 10.
Btw I recently tried to watch From Paris with Love but couldn't make it halfway through the second act.
I hope they didn't decide to stick a story in at the end and I missed it.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Ultramarines
A bit strange that. All CGI. The animation was sub-par and the quality of textures used varied a bit, ranging from a few (and definitely not all) really realistic looking faces to some pretty terrible terrain.
The plot wasn't much to write home about, but it had both John Hurt and Sean Pertwee doing some voice acting, and they did a decent job considering the material.
I wasn't really expecting much from it, so no disappointments.
Before that:
Dante01
A french sci-fi. Looked good, but I didn't enjoy it overly much.
They could have done something more exciting with that story.

Everyone has different ideas of funny or else there is no explanation of why Everybody Loves Raymond ran for nine years.
I rewatched most of The Ninth Gate a Roman Polaski film starring Johnny Depp ( btw at which point is Depp to old to still be called Johnny?) .
It tells the story of an amoral rare book dealer(Depp) who is enlisted by a mysterious millionaire( Frank Langella who carries real weight even when doing farcical things) to determine if any of the three remaining copies of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows , a book purportedly written by Satan himself are in fact legitimate.
I enjoyed it as it's spooky in the best Polanski way but all the time I kept thinking that he (Polanski ) and already gone down the same path to much greater effect in Rosemary's Baby.
My only other real complainant is that Depp ( to me ) never comes across as either physically tough or alternately weaselly enough to do the things required of him at certain points late in the film.I haven't seen The Tourist but I would be interested to see if he fairs better with straight "man of action " there than he did here.

Um, ok.
Others have gone at it at more length, but I'll say this: Moon is a good movie, far better than its budget would imply. What casting there was, was excellent.
I won't say I thought it was entirely logical, and I was left with a few questions after watching it, but that's the case with a lot of movies, good or bad,

Moon was awesome! Inteligent sci-fi,
to me it was one of the best movies I've watched in... say the past year or even more
and latest movie I've seen: 'Never Let Me Go'
Oh man! I ended up all depressed, lol. It's one of those movies that when it ends you are left all sad and feel cold or something.
That makes you think 'what if that was true?', 'what if people actually did that?'.
Some time after the movie I thought 'na, people would't do that', but then I remembered what that guy
in the movie The Island said: 'You'd be suprised what people will do to survive' (chills).
good movie,
quite depressing.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Valhalla Rising (2009)
I don't even know how to describe this film.
It made absolutely no sense and after watching it I had to read some reviews to see if anyone else knew what it was about.
There is maybe one page of dialogue in the whole movie (which is kind of funny given that two people are credited with the screenplay and there's a third listed for "additional writing") and the scenes are extremely static and artificial.
Basically, I think it was drivel but perhaps a second viewing under the influence of good psilocybin would make it more bearable.
But no, probably not.
@worldpease:
I read the book Never Let Me Go and was really disappointed by the film.
Spoiler:
Show
In the book, it's never explicitly stated what's going on and it's not till the very end that the reader understands the underlying premise.
That's why I was quite taken aback when the movie begins with an explanation of the cloning/donating scheme and thought it ruined the experience although I'm not sure how else they could have done it.

My thoughts exactly for Pixar's Wall-E. Still haven't re-watched it yet.
So far I've only been disappointed with two Pixar films; Cars and Wall-E. What hurts me the most is that Cars is getting a sequel while The Incredibles isn't.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Death Race 2, not as good as the first one but still pretty good, considering the fact it is a straight-to-dvd movie.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Micmacs 8/10 (I think it is the English title). The strange story of a man whose life was destroyed from weapons. He manages to discover 2 weapon dealers and decide to destroy them in revenge with the help of new eccentric friends.
First I have to say I'm a fan of the director Jan Pierre Jeunet. So although this one it's not as intelligent as Delicattesen or even Amelie it is in a different style a smart movie. The photography is great as always in his films, characters are special and the story is unique.
Even if you don't like the style it is a pleasant movie to spent 2 hours watching it. Dany Boon is a surprise as Basil

Guzaarish: I really like this Indian Film. Maybe though, that there was a lack of thrill in this one. 7/10

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Season of the Witch- Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman.
This is one stupid, boring movie.
If ever a script called for Cage to ratchet back up to Bad Lieutenant levels of crazy, this was it but inexplicably both Cage and Perlman play very restrained.
Clearly, this was just a paycheck for them both.
There are witches and demons but the special effects are lame, the story is predicable and the acting is pedestrian.
Season of the Witch wouldn't even make good MST3K fodder.
Skip it.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Rome (HBO series).
Not a movie, but I'm putting it in here anyway.
This was an absolutely great series from HBO.
Wonderful casting, sets, costume design...the whole ball of wax.
My brother recommended it to me and once I started, I couldn't stop watching- gobbled both seasons in two straight days.
I thought season 1 was slightly better but perhaps I was just getting jaded by the end.
This would be an excellent companion piece to the (much) earlier BBC series I, Claudius.
Highly recommended.
