We've explored hardly any space, we've attempted some micro-surgery, to say nothing of micro-surgery with nanoprobes and quantum physics is in its infancy.

The only more appropriate metaphor I can think of than 'standing on the precipice' for any of them would be 'we've just got our feet wet'.
