The Exorcism of Emily Rose ...

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Yikes!
Are there even small children who didn't find this movie insanely stupid?
I'm not referring to the gaping plot holes or thinly veiled Christian subtext either, it's the astoundingly boneheaded and inexplicable decisions made by the characters in every single instance.
Faced with any given circumstance and offered three options, you can bet the farm that the person in this movie will opt for the path that would leave an average five year old agape with disbelief.
The entire plot of this film is predicated/dependent on a protagonist making the worst possible choice, consistently and without reflection.
By my reckoning, it only took about fifteen minutes of running time for the leads to make a fatal error- had the director any gumption at all, he would have shown the real results of such a mistake and ended the film (for anyone interested this would be the swordfight "practice" on the ship's deck shortly after the faceless meatsacks who star in this film arrive in Narnia).
The look of the movie is serviceable (what can I say, it looked OK on a 20" PC monitor) but not in any way remarkable.
This is awful, life-scarring, IQ lowering video crap...spare yourself (and please! Let's think of the children!) the agony, I already took this one for the team.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
^^^ I saw the first one in cinema. I remember it taking about 1.5 hours for anything even remotely interesting to happen then only to finish with a predictable plot that would satisfy a three year old. So far The Chronicles of Narnia films are too violent for three year olds and too simplistic for people in higher age groups.
-
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
When I was young read the series several times and found Voyage of the Dawn Treader to be one of the better entries but even it is incredibly uneven .
A great deal of the blame is that C.S. Lewis , being a fundamental Christian, insisted on steeping all important plot points in allegory ( and therefore deadly solemnity ) while a lot of the incidental stuff ( like the Dufflepuds ) is silly in the extreme.
Works better in the books than the films but by the end you just wish they had all gone to heaven sooner and saved us all the time .
-
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
I didn't notice too many of the plot devices, dismayed as I was by the everyday stupidity of the leads.
Spoiler:
Show
For instance:
Faced at nightfall with an unknown island who's very visible city is oddly quiet/seemingly uninhabited, Caspian (apparently an Admiral or something) decides that the smart move involves all the main characters leaving the safety of the magical ship (magic in that it's unaffected by gravity- during a violent storm, as the ship is tossed on violent waves, two girls lie in bed, barely even swaying instead of being ragdolled on the floor and ceiling) and camping out on the beach.
Leaving all the guards and soldiers on the ship.
With no gear of any sort...people just sort of flop onto the sand and fall asleep.
While the comfortable, safe ship floats just offshore.
In any real army, a leader who made such boneheaded, potentially fatal decisions, would be fragged by the troops.
And don't even get me started about how it might come to pass that the King and his #1 captain decide to be the single reconnaissance team sent into the scary city.
While all the soldiers stand idly by.
They botch the mission badly, needless to say.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Season of the witch 8/10 because I like witches but it was not scary enough :) I expected more...
-
Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
"Not scary enough" and you "expected more", yet you give it an 8 out 10 rating.
What would you consider a 5?

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Paper Man / 2009.
I really wanted to finish this film, I really did. The first half is just confusing and appears to have no intention of progressing to a plot. It's not until Richard hunts down Abby does it really go anywhere. I dozed in and out towards the end so don't really recall anything after the sex scene in the car.
I think it's films like these that film reviewers/lecturers will have an orgasm over while the rest of the audience is just wondering what the fuck is going on. For instance, what was the purpose of the couch scene; was it a metaphor, did it have a significant meaning or was it just a filler scene?

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Airplane! (1980)
Complete waste of bandwidth and time. Extremely cheesy humor. I kept searching for a gem somewhere in the drag (considering on how many all-time-favorites lists the title has appeared) but the most exciting thing about it was a bare-chested woman...

Have to agree with you, nails. Not a great movie by any means, but kept itself going and had lots of anti-corporate sentiment to mirror the times. Funny that the movie was made by Hollywood corporate whores. Just shows they can make a movie and still miss the message entirely. Yep, 7.5/10 from me as well.

Finally got around to watching this movie and while I seemed to have missed the "attempts at conveying deep moral themes" - I think the whole plot was structured to the action not to make you ponder morality - I would have to say that I would have liked the movie if not for the incredibly off-putting last 2 minutes .
Someone tried to get too clever by half and instead of giving the audience payback for their investment decided that it would be "brilliant" to spit in their faces instead.
Without the last scene I'm falling in line with a 7.0 ( good action and it did a good job of a difficult task of making me root for a previously reprehensible human being) .
With the last 2 minutes a 0 as it left a foul and lingering taste in my mouth.

I remember liked it back then. It wasn't as good as Top Secret but not a waste at all
On the other hand I certainly feel sorry for the time I spent watching Dogtooth. The idea is clever, a father decide to isolate his family in order to protect them from the unknown, the photography is artistic but that's all at least IMHO. Not my type of art

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Inception (2010)
Good film. It makes you think about the power of the mind and how relative the concept of reality is. The plot is so well thought out that I'm nearly certain it's taken out of a book. If you haven't watched the movie yet, when you watch it be sure to keep track of every new piece of information as it becomes available, because you'll have trouble understanding parts other wise. I managed to keep up until the ending, which is still something of a mystery to me.

No, I think they wanted to go for the sort of mock-comedy that the 1st Scary Movie nailed. Airplane fell short imo, because the comic scenes were over-stretched, overly simplistic, or downright tasteless.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Middle Men- Luke Wilson, James Caan, Giovanni Ribisi.
"Based on true events".
Wilson plays Jack Harris, a calm and determined "fixer"...the man called in to help a struggling business identify it's problems and overcome them.
He is introduced to two crazy stoners (Ribisi & Gabriel Macht) by a lawyer friend, Jerry Haggerty (Caan).
The two have a dream of selling porn on the internet, do a half assed startup and are soon inundated by the response.
Along the way they make some very dubious connections with the Russian Mob and attract the attention of the FBI.
Harris (played with perfect stoicism by Wilson) realizes that the product (porn) is actually secondary...the real money is in the "pay per view" middle transaction (where a fee is assessed both parties) and he forms the first company capable of handling anonymous credit card transactions on the internet.
Money pours in, which attracts a lot of attention from people Harris- who fancies himself an upstanding family man- would prefer not to know.
His two partners never manage to grow up and make increasingly bad decisions, fueled by an ocean of coke and liquor.
I'm not sure how closely the movie hews to fact...Christopher Mallick, the real life Harris, was a producer on the movie and helped shape the script (no doubt, semi-whitewashing himself in the process), but it really doesn't matter.
The movie stands on it's own and is quite entertaining whether true or not.
Would do well paired with Blow, a similar story of improbable success (and failure).

You sir, are insanely wrong. It's my favorite movie of all time. Why can't you connect with laughter?
Who is the boss of cheesy these days? Dump him. It's the ultimate feel good comedy. Don't tell me you don't laugh when the guy say he has a drinking problem.

You are almost certainly too young to appreciate it.
(Not "too young" as in "years old" but too young as in "born too late").
Half the humor was "meta" in nature...the Beaver's Mom (Barbara Billingsley) speaking jive?
Peter Graves (Mission Impossible) as a pedophile?
Had you not grown up with these folks' crafted screen personas, the bizarre juxtoposition of their characters in Airplane! would fall flat.
Airplane! is an ur-comedy, much of the humor we enjoy today sprang from it's cheezy loins.

Re-Watched 5 Centimeters per Second. If beauty is visualized, then that would be 5 Centimeters per Second. A coming of age, melancholic, musical symphony.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
True Grit- Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld, Matt Damon.
14 year old Mattie Ross hires U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Bridges) to find and capture the man who killed her father.
Along the way they're joined by a Texas Ranger, LaBouef (Damon), who has also been tracking the bad guy.
This is not your parents John Wayne version of the story (which, for the record, I thought was as excruciating as every other John Wayne movie).
In fact, being a Coen brothers film, it's not much like any other western I've ever seen.
The language is a peculiar mix of formality and slang...almost Shakespearean in cadence and initially weird but ultimately fitting.
In typical Coen brothers fashion, the minor characters are colorful and weird (the travelling dentist with a dead body?) and the soundtrack is beautiful.
I liked it.
(Can anyone tell me if the voice of Mattie's lawyer is J.K. Simmons?
Also, about the credits...
I thought is was strange that Halilee Steinfeld, who is the heart of the story and always on screen, got below title billing while Josh Brolin (who plays the bad guy but is only onscreen for about five minutes) gets top billing with Bridges and Damon.
Seems completely out of whack.)

Widely assumed to be especially because of past association with the Coens but no one seems to willing to fess up.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Blue Valentine (2010)
Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams
This is a tough film to watch but completely engrossing. I understand there was quite some controversy regarding its initial US rating (NC-17) and while it is 14A (PG-13) here, it is certainly an adult film. Not in the sex+violence sense, but in the themes and situations being portrayed. Some "life experience" is needed to appreciate it, if you will. Both Gosling and Williams put in phenomenal performances.
9.5/10

Survival of the Dead
Oh how the relatively mighty have fallen .From satirizing the foibles of American consumerism to ironically simply cashing a paycheck himself.
Nothing about this unfrightening, artless, senseless, pointless atrocity qualifies it as a movie other than it was made using cameras and it exists on celluloid.
The characters, such as they are, are pencil-thin almost to the point of non-existence and unlikable and unattractive to boot. I only mention the unattractive part because as we all know a little eye candy has rescued more than one God awful horror film but the "actors" here seem to have been cast from an especially unpleasant homeless shelter.
Also for a film dealing with zombies there is remarkably little concentration on them but I guess that's because the true villain here is Mr. Romero and he didn't want any lesser lights stealing his thunder.
The thing that really struck the nail in the coffin for me though was George's pitiful reuse of the last minute "everything is going to work out in the end- oh look maybe not she's been shot in the head" contrivance .
Shocking in 1968 , not so much so in 2011 when it's not already only been done to death but buried and the ground salted as well .
Anyway a outline of the plot for anyone interested in exploring the limits of human tolerance.
A bunch of vaguely unlikable maybe military people seek shelter on a island from a plague of zombies . Along the way some that you have as much connection to as oil does to water die and we learn that the island is in the midst of an unexplainable feud between two old and ugly men over the merits of keeping zombies "alive" so that they will eat horses instead of special effect intestines.
That and there are guns but not a lot since apparently the budget couldn't afford them.
That pretty much sums it all up .
Not to be entirely negative on the plus side there was no Adam Sandler.

The Green Hornet.
This movie is stupid and unwatchable.
I didn't finish it so I'm missed the ending where I assume Kato kills Seth Rogan and bangs Cameron Diaz.
At least, that's how it should end but I'm guessing it doesn't.
Would have been a much better film though.

I thought she did an AMAZING JOB. She had the weight of the first third of the show completely on her. Another interesting fact- she is actually the age of the character she is playing. that is not so common these days. Her IMDB page is quite lacking for someone who knocked it out of the park on her first non-television role. I hope her agent doesn't destroy what should be an absolutely wonderful career.

The Last Exorcism. It was decent through the first half, then it just got horrific at the end. Total waste of time.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
Unstoppable- Denzel Washington, Chris Pine.
Human error (perpetrated by Ethan Suplee, whose entire career consists of "stupid, fat guy" roles) results in a runaway train threatening rural Pennsylvania.
There is hazardous cargo*...because, of course there is.
There is a train full of children...because, of course there is.
From start to finish this film is one cliche after another...no scene surprises or challenges the viewer, it's a very comfortable watch.
Washington rolls out the exact same character he used in Inside Man- the laconic, self-assured regular guy.
Pine brings his laser blue eyes and "only in Hollywood" manicured stubble.
And somehow, it kinda works.
The real star of the movie is the train, ole 777.
Some scenes effectively convey the power and mass of this threat but there are other shots where it's apparent that the trains are doing about 2 miles/hour and you wonder why someone doesn't just stroll over and board.
Again, it kinda works.
Perfect fare to veg out on the couch and kill a few hours painlessly.
Spoiler:
Show
* The hazardous cargo is a total red herring.
What's really gonna get 'em is the Staunton Curve and the absurdly placed fuel depot.
Police set up a "perimeter" about 100' from the site but the blast radius when the train flies into the depot will be measured in miles.
I suspect this is some sort of State supported Darwinian experiment.

Well, the inhabitants, such as they are, probably have a vested interest in the outcome.
Unstoppable isn't a thriller because from the opening frame the plot plays out exactly as you would imagine...there's no thrill because there's no surprise.

Coming immediately after the Green Hornet review and not being very smart I at first thought that you were talking about Cameron Diaz . Luckily I was wearing a toque at the time since it helped to keep my brain in place after my head exploded.

Re: What is the latest movie you watched and what did you think of it?
No, the last thing Diaz contributed to a movie involved Spiderman underpants.
