Does the end ever justify the means
Would you support your military, or police forces using torture in order to obtain intelligence or evidence to assist in fighting an enemy or solving a crime.
I would propose this definition of torture
Quote:
For the purposes of this Convention, the term "torture" means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions.

However that's obviously open to debate as well.
My personal view, torture as described above is wrong in any circumstances.
Re: Does the end ever justify the means
i agree that it should only be allowed if it is carried out by jack bauer, who is almost (almost) never wrong when it comes to torture.
Re: Does the end ever justify the means

sitting in a room listening to loud music, oh noes, i'll admit to anything:no:
Re: Does the end ever justify the means
I don't think it does, however I am sure it does.

So you feel that being right justifies the use of torture, so long as you torture the right person it's OK.
Re: Does the end ever justify the means
if jack bauer does it, yes.

So it's more to do with who is doing the torturing. So long as you trust them to torture the right people then that's OK.
Re: Does the end ever justify the means

You have a rather specific view on the justice system.
