new setup. questions about SATA, PSU and ram

detect SATA hard drivers automatically or do I have to pop in a floppy and install the drivers?

2. Would this

work for the AMD3000+ venice cored chip? also, does the mobo use the standard number of pins for the power plug or is it that 24 pin? (or do I have it all turned around?)

Any board sporting the nf4 chipset ( like both your choices) will not need F6ed SATA drivers during install.
Unless you are setting up a RAID array, then all bets are off.

You will need a 24 pin ATX header on your PSU.
AND SATA connectors AND PCIe connectors.

The RAM you chose will NOT work...it is DDR2 and that's for Intels, not AMD platforms (yet). I like/recommend/use this Patriot ram .
Excellent performance for the money (mine will run stable at DDR4000 speeds).

Be more specific. What cables do you think you need?

visit www.unattended.msfn.org and learn how to make a windows xp disk with all your drivers updates and settings on one disk, or for a quick solution http://www.nliteos.com/

I have found that this is the easiest way to get around the problem of xp not detecting Sata drives. Once you slipstream the drivers windows will detect the drives and you can install your os to these drives. This works for raid as well.

I meant these things. They aren't going to come with the mobo?

SATA connectors come with the motherboard. PCI-E power connectors may come with the PSU, depending what you get, they certainly don't come with the mobo.

You haven't said which graphics card you are thinking of using, not all of them need PCI-E power connectors. You did realise those are all PCI-E boards? In other words, no AGP slot. Thought I'd better point that out just in case you were thinking of using your existing AGP card.

That card will work and apparently does not require any special power connectors.

Hrmm.. I read on one of the newegg comments that you don't need the adapter for the 20 to 24 pin and that you can just plug it in. Do I lose anything if I just plug it in without the adapter?

I've never tried so I don't know.

If you can simply plug the 20 pin cable into a 24 pin motherboard, why would anyone bother making an adapter?

There are no new supply voltages, just more of the existing ones. So it is possible that some mobos will simply common them all together and therefore the extra pins are not really needed. Others may not, so parts of your mobo may be without power. That imbalance could itself cause problems, would you want to risk it for the price of a cheap adapter?

@clocker, re SATA power cables, I meant that the boards indicated both had them, I should have been clearer. I actually thought about that at the time. :rolleyes:

umm I'm having a hard time installing SATA, spent last 3 hrs on trying to get the sata hd to work and I still can't work it, I installed the first part of the windows setup file now on to the second part, it sorta of sees teh hard drive cause it installed the setup files on my hard drive and partitioned n stuff but when i restart how do I access it?

Ok so with all the problems solved. Does any KNOW if there would be an immense performance jump from an Athlon XP 2600+ to the AMD 64 3000+ venice? (check my sig for other parts)

I really think it depends on your setup.The old term READ THE MANUAL comes to mind here.On my board you don't need an adapter,just plug the 20 pin into the 24.But when I decide to upgrade to pci express video card I will need a 24 pin power supply.

No.

Agreed....no.

Til software is written/optimized to run the 64-bit architecture, you won't be bottlenecking at all running regular 32-bit XP.

You will be able to enjoy the advantages of the improved memory access, etc. right away though.

The difference is quite noticable.

after some use of this new setup, I find it is not up to my expectations since I'm downloading 3-5gig files, its taking up my ram on azureus and thinking of buying another 512. Is it okay for me to put another stick of ram while there is a dual channel setup already?

If it is okay, then can it be a different brand of ram?

What is your RAM install like now?

You should have 4 DIMM slots...what/how much is where?

I have two Geil sticks in dual channel in the first two.

2x256mb?
If so, adding two more 256s would keep you in dual channel (all four slots filled).
Adding a single 512 will put you in single channel.

Mixing dissimilar RAM can work, but is not the preferred option.

er.. their both 512 I'm going to buy another stick of 512.

So having 3 sticks kills my current dual channel?

1 gb of RAM is already a lot. If a downloading program is using it all then there's a problem with the software.

Man azureus got some mem leaking problems. Have you read up on that? Try testing a different bittorent client for a while?

well, which would you guys prefer? I had the same problem with ABC and PTC or something like that.
