Private filesharing with friends?
I am interested in sharing a couple of files with some friends and relatives that live abroad...
Can anyone think of an effective way of doing this via. the internet (Duhhh)?
I read something about VPN but I don't really have a clue on this, and also read something about a program called ifolder.
I thought originally that I could use a program such as DC and setup a private hub, but this is probably a bad way of doing this as there is probably quite alot of overhead and I don't leave my PC on constantly...
Gaim filesharing plugin also sounds promising but it seems that there has been no work on it, and there is no word on a release date, despite loads of money have been raised.
I need a filesharing program that allows me to only share with friends, that supports resumable downloads, and allows me to easily browse what my friends are offering, I do not want to have to pay to do this also.
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
What kind of files? Music, movies, software, etc.? Also, about how much would the total file size be?

As was I, but if he wants to share movies or something, then DC might be the best place. Or maybe a Limewire, or emule and just give them his username.
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
or setup ftp servers
or, setup a website/forum where you post lists of what you have, and use a private irc channel
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
Found the perfect way to do what I was wanting with a program called Hamachi.
See: www.hamachi.cc

What it is
With Hamachi you can organize two or more computers with an Internet connection into their own virtual network for direct secure communication.
Hamachi is fast, secure and simple. It is also free.
edit: does anyone want to try it out with me?
Apart from the Spanish guy.
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
I used to know of a program called Waste but I don't know if its still around

That looks sweet, but it looks like they have stopped development - you can still get it on sourceforge though, I dunno whats better hamachi or WASTE - I'll try both...
FTP is not really such a brilliant idea as I don't leave my PC on all day - and it leaves your PC susceptible to hacking and is relatively hard to set-up/maintain...
I could buy Server space, but my usage of it would not be completely legal, so its best I don't and besides that would mean I would have to upload all of my files...
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
Im glad you found Hamachi, ive heard of using it to work around game serials for online multiplayer use also

Re: Private filesharing with friends?
Livewire pro can connect directly to an IP if you have the address of your friend.
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
You can pretty much do all of that with SoulSeek - share with list members only, set up a private chat room between you or private messaging between two people, resume downloads, browse shared lists, etc.
The only drawback is that the server is unstable at times, and that large filesizes (4GB DVD ISOs) are not reported properly. But if I split them into rar'd files they're fine.
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
We use @ youceff WASTE for that.
We have a special room for VIP's so that they have access to 0day stuff.
the beauty about WASTE is is that it is extremely secure up 4096 bits http tunneling.
So your shitty isp cant sniff the stuff you send/receive and it keeps the mpaa/riaa out :)
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
how is waste different to hamachi? I have hamachi, to browse my files, I have to set them up for windows file sharing. also with that, the transfer is like when you copy a large file to another directory on your OS. Is waste the same?
Re: Private filesharing with friends?
You could also try slavanap or opennap file-sharing, you will need a file sharing client ...you can choose one here:-

Whatever you choose...have fun :)
