New Socket 939 build..need info

Ok I havnt stayed really up to date on the Socket 939 scene, and I am thinking of selling my current computer and building a new one. I told the guy I am selling it to I could build him a good one for like 600 but I think I can just sell mine to him for 600...you think thats a pretty good deal?

Ok, I know 939 is the best socket, and I just want like a A64 3500 or so...I think ill keep my ram and HDD. I just dont know which core to get and which motherboard, but I know you guys do lol.

Edit: Also, whats the best graphics card I can get for like under 250...

Well this is going to be quite entertaining....

Figure that a reasonable socket 939 system will run about $1K and up.

yeah i was going to put more money then just 600 in it..yahh

ok I decided that I would just get an HIS x800Pro...it brought the total to 600 and ill give him my card...not like he needs either lol...

Good choice on the HIS X800PRO. Right now on your budget go with a san diego or winchester core.

If you plan on clocking your way to performance either the 3200 or 3500 Venice cores will work.
Currently priced between $190- 220 they are the new 2500 Bartons...easily OCed and relatively cheap.

If the budget allows, the 3700 San Diego ($275) is the poor man's FX...big L2 cache and better memory controller.

The Winchesters are a bit thin on the ground at places like Newegg, but common at many "budget" distributors (like eSys) that our shop deals with.
My 3500 has been a stellar performer, but I'd go with a San Diego given the chance.

I don't see that as a necessarily a bad thing.
My Winnie will hold it's own with most Venice cores up to 2.6GHz or so.
After that it's down to luck whether your Venice will go too much further.

San Diegos are a whole 'nother story...they'll kick my ass.
But, such is life.

Ok..bringing back this thread Im thinking of building another 939. Is the athlon X2 3800 worth the extra 100 bucks over the 3700 san diego? I would think so but im just seeing if yall have any experiance. thanks!

At this point I don't see much benefit to going dual-core unless you are heavily into office apps. The (reputed) hotrod CPUs of the moment are the 939 Opterons (1.8's clocking in excess of 3GHz on air!) Essentially they are detuned FX's.

lets just say I have ram that can run at 500mhz...how do I clock that with my fsb and what ratio? Thats where im confused

All will become clear once you see the BIOS of your board.
There is a reason I recommend the DFI board.
No other BIOS offers the options I've seen with DFI, not to mention the voltage control settings.

I think I will stick with the san diego if I get it it, seems so nice, and im not into office apps alot but i like running lots of IE screens and such..

The DFI is pricey, and I dont want a lot of voltage controll as I dont plan to overclock much if any.

And there is patriot DDR2 and a lot of other stuff...but none of the boards seem to support it...

Go with the 3700+ if your into gaming. The 3700+ has 1mb L2cache and runs at a higher frequency then the dual 3800+.

Go with the x3800 if u dont game too much because dual core cpus don't really effect gaming performance very much.

I would recommand one good card like the x800 or 6800 over 2 6600 GTs in SLI because a lot of games don't support SLI.

A venice core 3200+ would be ideal if ur into OCing because my friend easily got his 3200+ from 2ghz to 2.6 ghz.
