filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
hello,
i have an adsl connection with dynamic ip over a router and i want to upgrade to an xDSL connection with static IP. the problem is, that i use eMule a lot, and i've heard that it is extremely esay to find out a users identity if a static id is used. is that true? is it safer to use dynamic id's?
please help me out!
greetings, blumentopferde

If you are worried about your IP address being tracked, connect via an anonymous proxy.
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
note: If you use a public proxy its going to slow you down greatly.

how do you do that and are there any good torrent programs that work well over a proxy?
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
ISP's usually have logs of who dynamic ip's have been allocted to so there is no difference in risk between static and dynamic.

here is a guide by J'Pol it might be of help...
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
there is not dangers associated with it.
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
Common.. Just use zonealarm or Norton Internet Security..
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
...but they will still find you if they really want to, so just dont bother with the proxy as you will be so slow,....all that extra time you will be needing to download you files, will surely be used by the RIAA to seek you out, like a rat in a hole ... and whats the point then in upgrading...so you can download more slowly?
You could of course try the opennap experience, where file-sharing server owners, like myself, respect and protect your anonymity.
Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??

Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
Is there any way to disguise the IP. Any software which we can use.

Re: filesharing with STATIC IP - is that dangerous??
well if you now go an use a proxy, then you should manage, let me see, erm 2.5 / 5 kbs. if you are lucky....There are so many variables, so maybe it would be a good idea to start you own thread, state what file-sharing program you are using what sort connection etc. etc... and post it in the right forum, where the eggsperts, will be hanging around to help you..:)

Kind of, but worthwhile to add is that all ISPs are obligated by law in most countries to keep track of what account uses what IP at any given time. So it's not like they have to do any extra work if you're on dynamic at all.
