Idea for the board.

Could we have a "Smoking Room".

Literally anything goes, discussion wise. If you don't like it, don't go in.

Obviously with an appropriate warning on the front door. Something along the lines of - "This section is not fully moderated, members may post any comments they want and no action will be taken. If you are not willing to take part in unfettered discussions please do not enter this section."

Other than discussions it would be subject to the normal rules, e.g. no links to porn sites, no links to warez etc.

What's wrong with the lounge? you can post anything there (as long as it's within the board rules)

Not to get personal, but I was recently told to temper my language and that others had been moderated for swearing. In such an area people could be free to flame, fight, swear. So long as it didn't compromise the board re porn, warez etc.

If others were clearly warned that it was allowed in that area then if they did not want to read that sort of thing, or take part in it, then they could just choose not to go in.

Well even if there was another area the board rules would still apply. The fighting, swearing, flaming, insults etc. would still be against the rules.

Check rule 9.

It seems to me that there are already quite a few of those type of posts in the lounge.

Thats why they want to make another area that the rules don't apply to besides some rules.

lol, the rules dont appy but some do, interesting sentence...i think he meant most rules wouldnt apply, but ones like the image rules and stuff would be kept

What I meant was that rules about swaering and insulting wouldn't matter but discussion of cracks and things like that would just like any other part of the board.

a couple of years ago, I asked the same...remember the "Adult forum" I asked for...well I think everyone thought i was asking for an "adult" porn forum...but no I was asking for exactly the same as JPaul is asking for now....I really meant an adult forum...for adults not for wankers... I believe it was [b][O][T] who suggested a password protected forum....

The lounge is already insulting and offensive enough. Have you forgotten that the leniency in the lounge already drives new members away? Let alone a forum where one could say anything he wants no matter how abusive, without fear of reprisal.

A warning about less moderation would sell such a place terribly short.

What sort of stats have you got for the lounge driving new members away.

I think you've some sort of hang-up about the lounge being offensive because you seem to mention it at every opportunity.

I think YOU find it offensive and are offended that other people don't.

Maybe your point would carry more, nay, some weight if the lounge wasn't the busiest part of the forum. Also if, by sheer weight of posts, the lounge didn't attract most of them here, via Google, in the first place.


In any case, you couldn't have missed the point more if you tried. Want me to explain why?

All you'll have left is noobs spamming their five first posts and stop posting for a month before coming back and start BT invites threads all over the place, pissing contests in Gameworld and maybe one or two posts a day in softwareworld and the drawing room.

My biggest concern is the level to which some people may stoop if an anything goes forum is set up. I know there will inevitably be some pretty shitty stuff posted, insulting, derogatory, or down right nasty and maybe even illegal. Why do people need to go to the next level on here? I suggest that those that want to spam their bile should either use msn or go to t'moderation or somewhere. Ultimately it is only going to be a few lounge regulars that would use it apart from the newb trollers....I don't see the point.

Its not the moderating problem for me so much as the idea of discussions being reduced to flaming, trolling and stuff that is basically out of order. I doubt if JP would want to play policeman anyway (although I haven't asked him)

I don't really have a problem with 99% of the lounge stuff myself but I can't imagine how much further people would want to go so that the lounge is insufficient do the job.

If everyone agrees, I am fine with it, I just don't see the point.

The Lounge on a forum is to keep spam away from proper discussions. That works and for the most part people use the Lounge, or threads are moved there as appropriate.

On this forum we also have The Drawing Room, which is supposed to be more highly moderated than the lounge, but isn't really. that's kind of slipped a bit and it's kind of become a Lounge for big words.

The reason for a Smoking Room is so that people can have friendly banter, in the Lounge, without any trolling or flaming etc. Then they can have nice wee chaps with minimal hassle.

Anyone who wanted to get involved in more "lively" debate could use the Smoking Room. Which I would expect to be subject to the normal rules of legality and decency. I would not propose for a second that racism, sectarianism, bigotry etc would be tolerated. Neither would anything like links to porn, warez etc.

It's just an idea and if people think things are OK as is, fine. However please don't make a decision based on "Rule 9". Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.

True, but the lounge is public and it has rules and moderation...on the other hand...it could become a bit of an elite forum..especially if it were password protected... :)

Password protected is an idea.
We could also make it visible only to members who have a certain post count. That way we wouldn't scare the noobs away (or whatever you mods will invent next).

I think things have been more-or-less fine until just recently.

A problem easily solved gets out of hand, for what reason one can only speculate. (:whistling )

That it has not been forthrightly addressed is a constant enigma.

The inanity of a "Super Lounge" should be apparent to all, and we certainly have no need to create an area that is defined by it's exclusivity, when such perceived as snobbery or snottiness is already (according to some) keeping people out of the Drawing Room and the Lounge.

Dodging the problem won't solve anything.

Have to agree there isnt much point in this as well stated by j2 above. Had considered this also at some point but in truth would have to admit it would only be to dodge an issue. As for the issues that appear at times we can come to terms with them as we have with others. It would be nice if they werent fed though so we could get through them quicker and have an even better place for us all...

You know half our problems would be solved if the mods would just close .... not delete some of the offending threads or posts . Just leave them worts and all .

Let the members decide to read them or not , just a suggestion hopefuly worthy of thought . Nothing worse than seeing a good rebutal deleted ! That always pissed me off to see an honest attempt to solve a problem thrown out with the trash . I thought we were better ? ;)

If the point is to have "lively debate," use the Drawing Room. That was its original intent. If the perception is that it's nothing more than Lounge2, I may be culpable for that; I imagine I'm the most active mod in that section, even if I've not been posting recently. Though I'm not much a fan of schlepping threads around, I could be more stringent if it's truly desired.

Guys guys guys...what's wrong with The Drawing Room? I actually find it a decent place to post and have a somewhat knowledgeable discussion about current happening and stuff, I for one enjoy talking it up with J2.

So far, I haven't seen any threads in there that make it look like another lounge, and what could you possibly do to make it more restricted? I mean isn't the whole point of having the Drawing Room is to be able to express your opinion or state the opinions of others that you find of interest.

yes,... but in the smoking room (hidden forum)..we can swear or curse the admin for the slow loading of the forum... discuss abortion, , George Bush, Muhammad, cartoons ..
etc etc without the thread disappearing to some deep and hidden archive in the KLF cellars... and could therefor never be offencive to the general public..

..another use ... create a sub forum from the "Smoking room"...where the addresses of good torrent sites could be found, and where one could seek invites...
