RIAA chief says illegal song-sharing 'contained'

LOS ANGELES — Nearly a year after the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling against online music file-sharing services, the CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America says unauthorized song swapping has been "contained."

"The problem has not been eliminated," says association CEO Mitch Bainwol. "But we believe digital downloads have emerged into a growing, thriving business, and file-trading is flat."

That's an optimistic view from an industry that saw its numbers slide to near oblivion after the launch of the original Napster in 1999. CD sales fell as much as 30%, and the RIAA pressed Congress and the courts for relief against what it said was rampant piracy.

The problem's never gonna be "contained" in my opinion, so they can keep dreaming.

The "problem" being "contained" and simply leveled off and no longer on the rise because everyone is now doing it, is a big difference. :no2:

I'm pretty sure their idea of "containtment" is a direct reference to the amount of revenue they are now raking in for online pay sites like what napster has become, along with the ever growing iTunes...

i think you're right. they've finally started to see some revenue from this type of activity, so they seem to be rethinking it's severity. :lol:

Awww come on everyone...give RIAA credit, they have things contained.

Afterall, new music sucks! Imagine RIAA storage sheds packed with all those crappy CDs they can't sell har har!

I think RIAA gets all their money from kids downloading ringtones & music videos heh!
