How do I reinstall Windows XP?
I've never had to do it.
I'm giving my old PC to a friend so I'm going to do a reinstall and let her start from fresh.
Obviously, there are tons of walkthroughs on the web, but I still have a couple of questions:
1. All I have is a Windows XP OEM disc. Is the fact that it's OEM going to cause some problems? Essentially, is the reinstall going to delete the boot info? That would be bad as the OEM disc doesn't have it.
2. Anything else I need to know prior to doing this?
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
Skizo you surprise me as of late, i thought you knew all this stuff and more.

Yea, with the increased hours at work, I haven't been able to keep up with my computer/software knowledge. I still wouldn't have known how to do this though. I've just never had to. I'm so careful with what goes on my PC that it's always kept very clean. I'm surprised at how fast one forgets this stuff if it's not used regularly. :blushing:
My main worry was that it would delete the boot info. I'm glad I asked too as from what it looks like when you say "format", it will format the drive. I can't do that since my copy of XP is OEM. :dabs:
The term OEM is used to differentiate that version of the software which is bundled with other hardware or software from that same software package sold on its own as a retail package.
For instance, when someone buys a Dell computer, they recieve a Windows disc included. It is not however a full copy, it's an OEM copy. All of the Windows information is on there, but the boot info, etc is not.
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
No.
If it's a proper install disc, it can be exactly the same as any other copy of windows, only not supported by microsoft, since it's OEM, savvy?
Definition, por Zed
In some cases, however, OEM copies come pre-installed, and the disc you get is a recovery disc, which I assume is what you are referring to.
In this case the "recovery" involved can be a reinstallation or installation, with or without a wipe of your previous settings and data, depending how mental the manufacturer is, I guess. If they happen to be a really playful bunch they might even make you download half of windows every time you need to reinstall (feels like it anyways, at those times).
A recovery oem install might also involve having all the drivers and crap extra software the manufacturer thinks you need installed, whether you like it or not.
However, getting back to the point: Make sure you know what you've got.
If you can boot from the CD (need to set things up in BIOS so you boot from the cd first, btw) and it behaves like any other windows disc it may well be that you can format, repartition, install and so on, to your heart's content.
(All these options will be available to you from the windows-disc.)
If not, and it's a recovery disc, try running it.
And obviously, if it doesn't remove all your old stuff, remove everything you've put in there yourself, then run the disc.
Ask a friend IRL if you aren't sure about what you are doing, btw. That's the best way of avoiding accidents.
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
There's guides on this forum that are quite good , I usually print them for friends .

Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
None of these are helping me. :dabs:
The computer I am trying to do this reinstall on was originally a Windows 98 PC and was upgraded to XP Home about 3 years ago. I no longer have the Win98 disc, and that's required for the reinstall. I do have a full copy of XP that I've used for my new PC, but I immediately get an error telling me that I can't use that version. I wouldn't have another product key anyhow.
I've tried downloading Windows 98 and tried that, but I the copy wouldn't work.
I think I'm going to have to try downloading another copy of 98 and trying again. :frusty:

@Skizo. He does have a good point. I think you should try to get a Corp edition of XP instead of Win98.

It's certainly worth a shot I guess. I'm gonna try this.

You won't have a problem using a Bit client to find an updated one all set up to boot from cd and install . My limited experience with them is you usually have to do a clean install , so look for a ETHO release . Just remember to read the INFO file . :)
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
Right now I'm looking at a screen like this:
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/849...yda3be0.th.gif
I got there by booting from the Corp. cd that I burned.
Do I choose the 'Delete the partition' selection?
Also, what is the "uinpartitioned space"? Is that the boot info?
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
If you delete the partition then it's contents will be gone. You can then recreate a new partition which will then be empty ready for a fresh install. Choose NTFS.
Don't worry about the small unpartitioned space. It's normal.

I had another question, but you answered it above.
Windows Corp installed. Crack used. Seems to work perfectly.
THANKS!
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
Just remember to visit windows update .
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
What crack? Windows Corp doesn't require a crack.
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
This one did I guess. :idunno:
The nfo said to:
Burn
Boot from cd
Run crack from ETHO folder.
In the ETHO folder is an install, that when double-clicked looks like this:
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8420/crackse0.jpg
When I pressed a key, it did the crack in like 3 seconds, and said it was finished.
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
Well then head on over to Winupdate and try to get updates . Got to love a release group who include a crack for WGA. takes all the fun out of tho . :D
Ver.1.5.708 is the latest one I believe , so if you read the NFO date is it October ? Then you have most of the latest SP/2 patches included on the cd . :)
Re: How do I reinstall Windows XP?
Yep. Got an October one. :)

Well your all set then and if you continue to seed the torrent you increase you ratio , so everyone one wins . There are some interesting XP pro corp files out there but still think its best to make your own slipstream disk . ;)
