I have donated to both ScT and F** because they are both awesome sites and I think they deserve to stay alive.
I do agree you should not pay for file sharing but I fell that donating to keep the site alive is different.

but what about newsgroups? i guess your not really giving anything back with that so its not really sharing. but still.

Oy Oy donating is good yeah when it comes to keeping it alive. Donating for freebies ie free up stats is not. This is what i think personally.

I was also thinking about it but then I realized that donating money to a site like that could very well cause legal problems for me if the site were to be taken down by the authorities. They would probably get all the logs with all the IPs but I'm sure that the list of NAMES of users who donated through Paypal would be even more useful to them.

No, I've never donated before.
So many people classify donating as paying to leech, but you have to remember that the site owners have server costs, too.
the only two sites worth donating to are sct and oink, and thats because you cant donate to buy upload credit, and donating doesnt exempt you from ratio requirements.

Respect syD i totally agree with you for once lol!!!! I think that donations are only necessary when you are not paying to leech but helping pay for server costs!!!

They can however get your ip if they were to seize a server thats hosting a tracker. But in most cases the owners of sites knowing they are acctually one of the main people at risk ussually have the servers hosted outside of legal jurisdiction.

I've only ever donated once and that was to Bitmetv to keep my membership there....and before any of you stereotypes start shouting "pay to leech", after downloading a 6GB file with what looked like plenty of leeches I only managed to seed back about 500MB after seeding for over a week. It stayed there for a month and still didn't seed any more.
The reason why....the leeches shown had only partly downloaded the file (just the episodes they needed) so there weren't any leeches as such.
Donating is not wrong....it just depends on the circumstances.
I have not and will never pay for file sharing. In my opinion, I contribute enough to the community, seeding and having good ratio...
tophos is awesome btw. i just wish you would open the casino section for non powerusers, its not that easy to get there on your site...
