When formatting your hard drive you are supposed to loose everything.
What is you question? :blink: :unsure:
Are you saying "Every time I erase my hard drive, everyting is erased"?Quote:

Technically speaking no. The data is not erased.
But in general, yes, when someone formats their hard drive they should not be wanting the data anymore.
My suggestion is any files you want to keep, make a copy (cd etc.).
exactly, thats my question for so long but I assumed the times my HD was "erased" with manufacture support on the phone they were telling me one way but not another.. ;)Quote:

ok...this pc I am typing on has a HD. The HD I am speaking of on this pc has in the past been through a format. I have always belived Format left nothing myself but from the 2 times before I have seen my GB go way down.
Out of the box I it was 120GB
now(2 formats) 109GB.
Phone Support was telling how to go about it. I can only assume there is more than one way to format a HD.
stop stalking me..I will not have web cam sex with you buddy.Quote:

Your hard drive is fuctioning normally.Quote:

The final available disk space will never be 120GB in windows. The disk space is calculated in hexadecimal by the disk manufacturer. When converted there will be less in real bytes. There is also alotted space for partition tables, boot sectors, file alocation tables etc... and Windows doesn't calcuate the space the same way you think.
I'm sure that you never had the full 120GB showing in Windows.
Disk manufacturers call 1kB (kilo byte) 1000 bytes, while all programmers know that 1kB = 1024 bytes (2^10 bytes).
1MB = 1kB * 1kB (1,000,000 bytes, or 1,048,576 bytes)
1GB = 1kB * 1kB * 1kB (1,000,000,000 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes)
So your 120GB = 120,000,000,000 is 120,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 111.8GB.

now with that said... remember that your os also takes a good amount of space, etc... and if you have changed os's with formats, you will see a difference also.
I'm sure I didQuote:

Duties are not performed for duty's sake, but because their neglect would make the man uncomfortable. A man performs but one duty - the duty of contenting his spirit, the duty of making himself agreeable to himself.

So why don't you call the manufacturer and tell them to supply you with a 15 gig hard drive (which is actually only a 12 gig hard drive) cause that's what you think they cheated you out of!
lol, I can't wait to hear the response from them!!
All hard drives are given a generic, rounded off value. And like everyone has been saying, once you add that drive to your system, it needs files and indexes installed to make it work. Those types of files aren't added to the capacity of the drive, they're subtracted from it which leaves you with the true operating capacity. The Size that it shows in a hardware evaluation list or system diagnostic is just a generic label for that drive any way and it's called an "advertised value".
Are you gonna be just as upset when you realize that your 128 meg video card actually only has 120 meg available because some is reserved for the system? Or when you figure out that not all of your ram is available for the same reason?
If you don't believe that then just run KillDisk to get back the space you think you have and reboot! Good Luck!!!
The above statement is correct.Quote:

Also,
Why don't you get mad at your monitor manufacturer. When you measure it you will see that it isn't 19" but 18". :lol:Quote:
