Hey my ISP is Comcast and I download torrents and files usually at speeds of 300-900 kb/s.
But for some reason my upload speed is never higher than 40 kb/s.
Is this normal?

Yup, I have comcast also and I got amazing download speeds which I prolly don't even use most of it, and my upload is capped at 45kb/s. Thanks Comcast!

in most markets, for $10 more per month, you can get a 90KB upload. definitely worth the extra dollars. give them a call and ask about increasing your upload speed.Quote:

Atleast upload rates seem to be getting better as people are turning into "creators" of "web 2.0", prompting ISPs to provide better upload speeds so that people can share pictures, use VoIP, etc.

Most isps throttle down the outgoing speeds cause in fact it costs them more money for outgoing transfers than it does for incoming.
They also dont care if your dl "stuff" they just dont want as much "stuff" being shared over their networks so they limit the speeds as well.

Why does everyone keep on saying that they hate their ISP's, if you want a faster upload speed then you have to pay more, it as simple as that.
Here in belgium all people can only download/upload 10GB/month.. We can download 5 gig and upload 5 gig in few days and the rest of the month, when we pass our limit our speed is capped at 3 kB/s or something.
Normal speeds here are (when we didn't pass the 10 gig) 400kB/s download and 30 kB/s upload.
I have a 4mbit connection because we have a company connection, there is also no download/upload limit.. But it's really expensive. Normal people can't pay it here :(
i'v got a DSL covad ISP and get pretty good speeds, normally around 800k/b DL and 106 k/b UL, but im getting quite a few disconnects a day, they say its cause im far from the main central ISP or sumthin...and those bastards keep capping my speed now at 6mbps cause they say my connection will be more reliable, but I pay for 8mbps connection!!:angry:

Same thing with RoadRunner (NC). Since I'm still in high school, my parents need to pay for internet and aren't too happy when I complain about the upload speed and when I pretty much have to keep the computer on the whole day even when not using it..

Btw, my speeds are:
700-800 kb/s Download
40 kb/s Upload (when you're at like 45, you can't do ANYTHING online.. so I set it at 40)
However, the price is only 30 bucks per month, not bad.
I have just signed up to Sky Boradband, and am a bit worried that I am taking the piss out of their fair usage policy. Screw em, they can afford my bandwidth
lol, build a more electrically efficient computer then, the electric bill is probably pretty terrible if you have a dual core p4 or something running 24/7. Or really, buy a laptop with a networked hard drive as the torrent drive.Quote:

I'm also a subscriber of Comcast's cable broadband connection. I got the higher plan, 8mbps DL / 90 kBs UL, but for some reason my upload maxes out at 45 kBs. I don't know why.
I've checked all I can think of, and even in speed tests taken at different times it never gets any higher. My download's great, but my upload is only half of what I'm paying for. :frusty:

you need to call and complain. 1-800-COMCAST (1-800-266-2278)

My upload now is 250kbs, It was 65kb but when my ISP "cox" did upgrades laying fiber optics my speed jumped..Crazy thing is that it ended up being a free upgrade to the consumer. I am running cox as well and I have 15mb down and 1mb up. I have noticed that my upload speeds cap at about 140kb/s though. So I am actually getting a little more up speed than I should (No complaints of course). I have never hit the full 15mb down though. I hit 11 one night and I was amazed how fast my torrents were downloading. Depends on the tracker too.Quote:

1st of all i see so much confusion here between bw and download speed. bw is measured in kilobits per second and it's what the ISP is telling you and download speed is measured in kilobytes per second (and is what you will see on the torrent client). 1 kilobyte = 1 kilobits.
2nd on dsl and adsl it's normal to have an upload speed much worse than the download speed ... that's the disadvantage of this technology.
3rd the ISP really has nothing to gain if you download more than you upload... it's vice versa. if they take something from another network it might cost them money. if they upload something to another network they might win money. depends on the agreements they have with other networks cause sometimes it does not matter, but anyway if it matters the rule is like on phone operators (all the calls i made to your network [download] - all the call you made to my network [upload] = the money i have to pay you). usually this rule is applied when 1 network has content and the other does not have any content and is only downloading.
about the internet access ... here in Romania we make small LAN's (small might mean 100 users) and we buy a good bw from the ISP. this way we get a good price for buying a large bw plus we have a low cost/user plus we have good bw cause not all the users use the bw all the time.
