Which processor if faster/better?
Sorry bout this dumb question, but I am getting a new barebones system soon and I don't know much about processor speeds and 5hit like that so I figured I'd ask the super inteligent people of this fine community. okay which processor is better and or faster:
Intel Core2 duo e6300 1.8Hz 1066 fsb 2048k
or
Intel pentium d 945 3.4Ghz 4094 socket 775
They are more or less the same price so money isn't a factor but I really just want to getthe best product in my price range. You know what if someone wouldn't mind looking @ the kit i am looking to get here and let me know what you think that would be great too. If anyone has a better deal somewhere too that would be fantastic. The only thing is I have 2 400gig HDs that I want to keep so the mobo cant be Sata2 and I have ddr ram so the mobo has to handle that too, this one I can use both to transition to the newer ram. Thank you all to help me on this I'm sure I will get some grade A advice.

Re: Which processor if faster/better?
Damn man you're everywhere! I have no idea basically my mobo went bad and it doesn't recognise my USB ports ne more. I figured I'd get a new processor out of the deal atm I have intel p4 2.80 ghz so anything would be an upgrade to me.
BTW what does clocker mean/

Why not just get a USB 2.0 PCI card?

I never said it was economical.

Re: Which processor if faster/better?
the 6300 wins. standard benches/performance may be on par, but in the long run the 6300 will oc @ least another 700mhz and then just dominate that baby 945.

Did you look at the dimensions? It's a beast!
Here it is next to what appears to be a Dell:

ok, i've misworded what i meant to say. what i was meaning is that the slot for the psu is to small and will cover up the top fan if u want to use that fan of course. if u don't want to use the fan then i'm sure ALL psu's will fit in it.

You definitely want the Core2Duo but the rest of that deal is crap.
Sorry, but you'll have to find another use for your old DDR/AGP stuff.
If necessary, save up till you can get the basic platform right...no sense crippling yourself from the outset.

I'm sure the real FST staff would be surprised to hear that.
I'm NOT a staff member, just an opinionated old fart.

Re: Which processor if faster/better?
@ Clocker Thanks you so much for the helpful answer. Do you have a recommendation for me? I might even splurge for the ddr2 ram but I still don't need a hard drive.

Re: Which processor if faster/better?
For a limited budget, here's an example of what I'd do...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115003
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131041
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130062
You can play around with your mobo and vid card choice, but you get the basic idea. All those total to $500. Use your old case and maybe even hard drive(s) and optical drive(s).
If you need to buy a new hard drive, then go here for a windows xp crack kit. It will make M$ say that your software is genuine.

The trick to a successful build is knowing beforehand where you want to end up.
Exactly what kind of PC do you want?
For example...if it's to be a gaming machine, how likely are you to invest in SLI- do you need two PCIe ports or not?
How much RAM do you foresee getting?
If 2GB ( a really sweet number these days) should you start with a 1GB stick or 2x512.
Etc., etc., etc.

Re: Which processor if faster/better?
Okay basically I wanted to use my old ddr ram 2 gig 1gig x 2, so my mobo options were limited. I don't do any gaming so I don't even need a video card I realized after playing around It is the same price ( $400 ish budget ) to get new ddr2 ram 1 gig with a better mobo. I would LOVE a recommendation on a cheap decent mobo with 4 ram slots ddr2
