If you can't taste food you'd never be overweight cuz you'd only eat due to real hunger. Many cravings for food or better yet, certain foods, are based on taste.
You wouldn't pollute your body with sodas and the like since you couldn't taste it. You would eat based on pure nutritional value. You'd have to rely solely on smell, however, to tell you when food or drink is spoiled.
I am suprised that there aren't weight loss regimens based on supressing your taste. Remember when you've had that cold that fucked over your olfactory receptors and you got pissed you couldn't taste anything? You end eating just too satisfy real hunger.
The problem I see is how would fuck over you sense of taste without fucking your sense of smell? Taste seems more dependent on smell. However, for the purpose of this poll, taste is taste and that is all.
I do wonder as well that if one's sense of taste is gone for a very long period of time, would a person essentially starve? I would think your primal instinct to eat would be gone and you'd rely soley on intellect to eat. In certain instances when I have had that "cold" I ate in hopes I could taste even a smidgen of something. Over a long period of time, who knows if a non-thinking person would just "give up".
I don't agree with you on the last point. If you don't feel tastes, you would still feel hunger, that has nothing to do with tastes. So i don't think eating is based on one's intellect. Eating for pleasure is based on intellect, but eating is not. I'm not even sure if animals feel tastes like we do: raw meat and grass can't have too much taste. Actually, when you eat meat, you rather feel the taste of the spices that were used.
By the way, one of my favorite snacks is extracted rice, and it has absolutely no taste, but it's great (on its own, not in yogurt or such). So my answer is easy to guess.
