Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
"Jhannet Sejas, a 19 year old girl was immediately arrested by the police after she recorded a 20 second clip from the movie “Transformers” that she wanted to show to her little brother. She now faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine."
"Sejas was celebrating her 19th Birthday with her boyfriend in a local theater in Arlington. A few minutes after she taped the short clip the police came rushing in and took her into custody on the charges of "being a pirate".
Sejas and her boyfriend were promptly escorted out of the movie theater, still confused about what just happened. “I was crying, I’ve never been in trouble before.”, she later said in a response to the trip to the police station.
Of course Sejas had no intention to sell the 600 millisecond clip, she wasn’t even planning to put it on YouTube. The only thing she wanted to do was show it to her 13 year old brother, who was dying to see the movie himself. Unluckily theater owners just introduced their new zero-tolerance policy since everyone can be a pirate.
Kendrick Macdowell, a representative National Association of Theater Owners said in a response: “We cannot educate theater managers to be judges and juries in what is acceptable. Theater managers cannot distinguish between good and bad stealing.”
Good and bad stealing? Nuts!, the guy obviously has no clue what he’s talking about. If all theater owners treat their customers like this they will start to lose even more money than they already do now. And guess who they will be blaming? Right, Pirates.
Sejas will go to trial later this month for recording a motion picture without permission, and is facing up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Seriously unbelievable."

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
Here's a washington post article about it:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...080102398.html
They mean to tell us they need a court to help them distinguish between a real cam pirate and a regular movie goer who just happened to record a few seconds of a movie in a theatre?

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
I think this has been taken too far. I probably would of just slapped them on their wrist and then be done with it.

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
I think they took it to far, she didn't really do anything wrong to my standards at all. She simply wanted to show her brother, and having the police come rushing in on you durning a movie, thats kinda rediculus and emberessing at least have someone come in and be like please step outside etc.. etc. and if they refuse then bring in the cops or w/e
but thats still super lame on what they did, thete such picks about it. i bet it was just a cellphone cam, blah people are super gay about it, 600mms who gives a rats behind.
stupid stupid stupid.

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
Personally, I don't see why she shouldn't be punished. So what, she had no intention to sell it or post it on youtube or whatever, but still... she recorded it, and thats the law. What will be next? Someone will get off for only recording 1hr59mins59seconds of a 2 hour film, claiming that they didn't even record the whole thing... Just my thoughts. And yes it sucks that this happened to an innocent, but if she gets let off anybody actually guilty of it can just use a similar excuse, no?

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
@JordoR
harsh m8 I'm sure you wouldn't mind getting busted for downloading a pirate movie/app/album whatever.
-
Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
The law that she is accused of violating was intended to prevent people from uploading and taking away revenue from the movie industry. In the end that is all they care about, how much money they made and i highly doubt that anyone will choose watching a 60 second camera phone clip over going to the theaters.
funny how the movie companies can have a clear black and white policy when it comes to camming films, but considers consumers fair use rights a gray area.
lol at the charges of "being a pirate" did they seize her eyepatch and wooden leg as evidence

Yeah so much for understanding on your part.

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
That's a load of crap. A fricking movie trailer can go on for longer, or teasers, and she's reprimanded for a 60 second clip.

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
wow that shits rediculous....lol

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
I really don't like the idea that she is being arrested for something like copyright infringement. At the minute even judges cant decide what exactly is fair use and recording 20 seconds of a film may indeed fall into that category. So how anyone can be arrested charged and face the possibility of having her freedom taken away for something that even judges cant decide on what's right and wrong is insanity.
This girl should be released without charge and the law should be reviewed. If you are caught recording in a cinema with intent of piracy then yes its wrong and should be dealt with as a civil matter.

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
Next thing you know, they'll be demanding to wipe peoples memories of having seen a movie before they leave the cinemas so that they can't tell anyone what it was about

Re: Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip

With today's copyright laws in regard, I have to disagree. She is 19 and society recognizes her as a mature and responsible adult. She knew that what she was doing at least might be considered illegal. So, while I believe her penalty is extremely flagrant in its severity, I do not believe she should go unpunished.
However, if it were up to me, I'd let her go.

-oh and for those who don't know...
"Psychological projection (or projection bias) can be defined as unconsciously assuming that others share the same or similar thoughts, beliefs, values, or positions on any given subject."
It happens more than you know
