Anti-file Sharing Law Starts Today

The front page of the USA Today had an article today that the music industry is going to track people who download and share music files: and once they have a person's info they will be sued. I also heard on Howard Stern this morning that the guy who put THE HULK online before it went to theatres is in jail.
What do you think will happen to private file sharers like ourselves? I am interested in everyone's opinion. This probably won't stop me from sharing but I want to know how everyone else feels about this and is it legal for them to watch what we do online?

Why dont they just stop selling Blank VHS tapes, CDs, and DVDs as well... !

hey wolfmight, u seem to be the genius of the forum. Any ideas on how we can stop these music industry psychos from tracking our uploads and downloads? Will a simple firewall like Zonealarm work?

No, not ZA...or at least not easily.

Other firewalls are easier to configure with IPs..

Try PeerGardian, and keep it upto date.

However remember you dont need the whole database in there...just put in the IP ranges that will affect YOU.

The database includes Government depts from all over Europe/USA...inc Defence etc...obviously some of these ranges are not interested in the whether you have Matrix Unloaded etc....unless its some poor squaddie downloading off you.

Others will be looking for you.

Which ranges you input, depends upon where you live.

A firewall like Zone Alarm would help, but i suggest if u want to be completely safe... try not to download a any huge amount of files while this is all happening right now and they shoulnt be able to find ya...

I dont understand why they didnt do this about VHS video copying and such back then.. Some people distributed loads of copys of 1 movie.

They really want this to end, but as long as theres the "Internet" i'm not sure it ever will.

I'm thinking the main source of the internet is a bunch of Servers at the US Government.. If they shut down those and the ISPs.... there will be too many problems..
To me, i think of it as... Your computer is your property.. You can do anything u want on your computer (if u want to crack software... Crack it..) as long as your not hosting some huge warez site with direct download links to files people can download at 100kb/s+, you shouldnt be doing anything wrong.

It's all a bunch of electronic data... and your computer is the painting canvas.

I posted this question already but it was in a really old topic so I don't think anybody's paying attention to it anymore. Anyway I downloaded Peerguardian and I was wondering a couple of things. How do I figure out which IPs to block and does peerguardian run in the background or do you have to have it open to do any blocking? I ask the second part because I have one process for it running at all times and one process for it that only runs when I have it open.

i don't know anything about your two processes, but i moved my Peer Guardian folder to my start menu so it loads everytime i log on.

I see a few of you are wondering why the government doesn't just outlaw video tapes while there at it. The truth is they already tried to back in the early 80's, but most people don't remember it. A suit was brought against sony, claiming that their betamax VCR's were an aid to copyright infringement. sony's lawyers won by argueing that people recoriding broadcasts were not infringing copyright laws, but simply "timeshifting" the broadcasts. Personally I think that we should use this case as a basis for the way we deal with online piracy. Any material that has ever been broadcasted should be allowed to be copied and downloaded as much as people care to. If it is legal for the material we are downloading to be attained, for free, by other means, then why should these means be illegal? the answer is, they shouldn't. It's not that we are stealing music, it's just that our "Timeshifting" skills have increased tremendously. In my opinion, as soon as the music is broadcast over an unencrypted channel, it's fair game for anyone to own a copy of.

I agree with that.
They are holding history and culture hostage to some extent.
Some programs never are released for public distribution or sale which should be a crime in itself.
I waited a hell of a long time to buy the Nirvana unplugged video for example. Finally had to take advantage of other resources to get a program that should have been widely available based on popularity alone.
There's $20+ they'll never see from me.

Oh, and, have you ever tried to order a video from blockbuster or some other seller? Waiting..... waiting.............. !

Anime is copyrighted, but often copyrighted only in Japan.

Plus, if it was broadcast on tv, they don't seem to mind as much if it's shared online.

I've heard of rare instances of US tv shows being shared in the US causing trouble for the US sharers, but never for those outside the US.

Can the music industry also sue people outside of the US, as in other countries?

re the taping off TV broadcasts, dunno what it is for the US, but I'm pretty certain I read in the paper ages ago that technically you're obliged to wipe any TV recordings you've made after 24 hrs of watching it. Just another of those unenforcable laws I suppose.

I only use kazaa to d/l individual rare songs so doesnt effect me really, just as long as they stay the fuck away from irc i dont have any gripes.

Yes the RIAA is for real and they will in my opinion succesfully prosecute some P2P users (probably very few) in order to appease their pampered prima donna "artists" who believe that some poor schmo making close to minimum wage is stealing from him by sharing a few mp3 files. The real truth of the matter is that the reason music cd sales have dropped off in the past few years is because the industry is putting out less and less of what the buying publc wants to hear and what they do manage to sell is overpriced. The industry has lost touch with their customer base and is trying to lay blame instead of reacting to the situation and get on top of the market again. This is, after all, the 21st century and these dog and pony guys running the show can't possibly be able to look themselves in the mirror and really believe prosecuting anyone is going to help their sales and cashflow situations. Guy's.... if your listening.... you are definately blowing a big opportunity here. You have an excellent means to increase your customer base and at the same time increase your profit margins if you would only distribute what you sell electronically at a reasonable price. MP3's and AVI's will never equal the quality of Audio CD and DVD so you really could be selling both versions of everything and making some serious cash. Distributing the lesser quality versions of audio and video entertainment electronically costs almost nothing and if you make the price and availability reasonable you will definately see the traffic beating a path to your website. I would love to be able to download a movie at the maximum rate my broadband connection will allow for the same price I could rent it from Blockbuster. ...... think about it.... it's higher prices eating into your revenues. Expanding your customer base is a very good way to remedy that situation.

All i have to say is that p2p is never gonna stop!! Never !!! its impossible!!! they cant inforce laws grealy enough to shut down/stop all p2p'ing!!! Well basicaly there was Napter and it kinda started it all and gave the push to p2p'ing needed well they shut it down because they were established in USA so they got sued so they went under but then kazaa blasted off, Morpheus, Bearazaa, Shearzaa, kazaa lite, kazaa gold, kazaa diet, iMesh, Wippit, CompuTwin P2P, Grokster ,BearShare, Blubster, Phex..... etc. i mean they r trying to compete each other trying to come up with the best p2p software, cmon now u knock one down 10 moer r gonna pop up!!! As long as there is internet and computers p2p is gonna be there, u dont even realize that some people depend on p2p for its gonna gonna end, becuase there r too many people using it!! KMD(kazaa media desktop) has beaten ICQ's record of around 250 million downloads and still counting! ass much as they are gonna try they cant !!! well if kazaa goes down! THATS GOOD !! because then a new generation of P2P pops up BETTER FATERS MORE RIALIBLE , its not gonna end, all i am trying to say is that CALM DOWN !!!!!!! You know? This is REALLY so ignorant of those who try and use P2P as an excuse, I mean...What's the difference between say , renting from block buster? End result is the same, not to mention, believe it or not, BLOCKBUSTER makes copies of originals and original looking labels,(This is TRUE, a few BLockbusters I rented from have made copies of originals)and rents them. So for example, if they purchase just ONE video and rent it out to say 300 people, that's 300 people who had access to the video, and can make a rip, copy or whatever from that one, times that by 300 , etc. etc. and what have you got? Filesharing in another form, You don't see any law suits coming outta that now do you? So what's the difference, they should just GET A LIFE!
