Yep, should be no different. Dont see Big Brother coming to shut down Giganews any time soon
thats good to hear thanks for the response
You're just fine.
I'm using Giganews which just so happens to be just a few miles from me in Austin, Texas.
Also, to quote Beck38 as he put is nicely...
Quote:
Usenet servers are (and have been for many many years), in the U.S., come under 'common carrier' laws and regulations, like the phone company. The telcos cannot be sued for what they 'carry' (i.e., like a bomb threat for instance), or satellite companies (like 'Playboy' or Howard Stern) as they come under 'common carrier' laws. In fact, they are 'required' to carry any and all paid traffic, going back to 1934; very settled law.
Hell, it's one of the few US laws that actually makes sense. A shame they weren't all so sane.

the wishful ramblings of the uninformed?
read this

russ allbery is the author of inn one of the big usenet news servers
how about an actual usenet service provider
http://www.slyck.com/forums/viewtopi...arrier#p401560
they probably have a lawyer that checked, so thinks i will take their opinion of their legal status over other wishful thinking posts by random posters
And why should we trust that your "source" is any more informed?
The first writer states :
"If you're currently making decisions based on your believe that CPAN is a common carrier, I'd recommend that you check that belief with competent legal counsel."
I'm not familiar with the term or whether it has fuck all to do with NGs, but I'll assume so at the moment for the sake of argument.
The second link is just another forum post. I have no reason to buy into what they're selling any more than the forum post you're attempting to debunk. :ermm:
how can you have a reference to a law that does no exist? ask me too to prove that your movie theater is not a common carrier?
Read up and have fun:

As far as i know the usenet providers have value-added common carrier status.
BUT can they 'grass' people up for what they download from their servers???
I don't know any usenetprovider that logs what you download, they just log the amount of traffic.
If you use secure connections you should be even more "safe" but personally I don't think it's going to happen that anyone is spying on you, unless you download/upload child porn etc.
