Okay, it's not just this forum. You've probably noticed it too. What's the deal with regular members (who may or may not have been on a forum for a long time) doing the jobs of the moderators? Members say things like "hey, that's the wrong forum", "stop spamming", etc. What is it? Don't you think the moderators can do a good enough job? In general, moderators do a great job and I don't think they need the extra help. Opinions?
These two threads need merged - get a MOD
There are a number of 'regular members' as you call them, that have been here a while and know the rights and wrongs of posting on this board and if they feel that they can 'guide' or 'advise' then I think they should go ahead. They have helped a number of users and topics in the past without having to bother the mods. However if you (the general you not fluffy bunny) feel that they are out of line then you have the chance to say so as the 'regular members' do not have the power to edit your posts or lock the topic. There are only a limited number of mods and they can only be on at certain times and while I agree they do a good job I am sure that they don't mind getting a hand from time to time.
I'm sure the Mods don't mind that little bit of extra help, y'know?
Just my opinion tho..... :)
I hate people who do that if they are so bothered they should ask a mod to move it merge it delete it ect.

they cant be everywhere all the time, and the more the merrier in my opinion. :rolleyes:

If its new members that dont know about posting in specific parts of the forum, its quite silly to think that as bad - it can only be seen as good. The quicker people realise then the better, no?
Mod's cant be around checking everything all at once, so if people are telling them the right thing to do, i see no problem with it !!

I agree, mods do the job effectively - But I believe that the effectiveness of mods can only go to an extent alone; to be truly effective, they need the support & help of the mods. Which a lot of people do, including myself.
Doing these things openly, I agree are a bit more bang instead of an actual shot. But most of those AFAIK who do help the mods do so in PMs, notifying them of things which mods may have passed over.
I'd say that for every member you hear spouting like they're a mod, there's another two regulars PMing mods to notify them of things out-of-hand. Though I can't be sure of that - The mods would most like correct me here :)

Just people who don't tell mods and just post there moaning when they know the only people who can do anything about it are mods or admins ect.
If anyone feels some Mod work is required on a topic, feel free to PM any online Mod. They'll be happy to run the rule over it.
It certainly makes our life a lot easier.

Yeah that was pretty funny JPaul. Back to this Modding thing though. I think subtle hints work well. I mean if the person is new but acting like "Mr. Big Pants" then maybe someone could hint to them and they'll get the message. Or PM. I'll admit that I'm new I learned on a 486x66 comp and I didn't do alot of surfing with that version of Microsoft IE that's for sure. It was a slow era. I was capable of creating config.sys and autoexec.bat files and that was the extent of it. Excuse my noobiness.Quote:

As a matter of historical interest, that was why the C drive was called that, because A and B were floppies.
Consider yourself lucky to have had floppys! I started on a TI 99/4-a with tape backup. RS-232 was it? With a horrible scream from the cassete deck if you forgot to decrease the volume before a backup.
I was quite privileged in that I managed to purchase one of the few extended basic modules available.

I did (and still do) some programming on my trusty old Commodore 64. I made a Breakout clone and a Snake clone, both of which were rather crude but still fairly playable :)

I'm just rediscovering the C-64 now through roms and emulators I've downloaded. Surprised at how well it runs on a modern PC too!

If you want to get really serious. The first time I programmed a computer it was using an alphanumeric keypad. We put the code in using hex. After having spent days writing it and compiling it manually. The programmes were saved on "tickertape".Quote:
