USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
Intel and others plan to release a new version of the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus technology in the first half of 2008, a revamp the chipmaker said will make data transfer rates more than 10 times as fast by adding fiber-optic links alongside the traditional copper wires.
Intel is working fellow USB 3.0 Promoters Group members Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, NEC and NXP Semiconductors to release the USB 3.0 specification in the first half of 2008, said Pat Gelsinger, general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, in a speech here at the Intel Developer Forum.
" I had to read that again , 4.8 gigabits per second. "

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
thank God! My external burner burns reallly slow going thru a USB 2.0 line. I hope 3.0 is much faster.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
YAY! I've been hoping for this for years!

Sorry bud I tried to quote not edit . :pinch:
Thats what I meant Killum , it should be 10 times faster according to the report .
"The current USB 2.0 version has a top data-transfer rate of 480 megabits per second, so a tenfold increase would be 4.8 gigabits per second."

Great speed! :w00t:

Read this elsewhere. I just hope they lower CPU utilization with USB as firewire so well exemplifies. Time for better solid-state drives!

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
10 times faster!!? Thats great! I just hope it doesn't cost to much to implement it, especially with the fiber optic being used instead of copper.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
This is great news for people like myself who use external hard drives daily. With speeds much faster than eSATA, I see no need for it.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
I can see the future, and it is good.

I don't know about you guys but 4.8 gigabits per second gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling.

Good reporting!!! Awesome news.

WOW :D woot this is great cant wait for it!!

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
damn....and i was gonna upgrade my computer next month....guess i'll just wait until 2008
Thanks for the news

This gives you an idea of the future of sata, ethernet, etc.:)

Indeed.
They estimate that they'll be releasing final specifications in 2008, but that the availability of USB 3.0 won't arrive until 2009 or 2010.
Besides, you're precious USB 2.0 items will still work.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
its really good news usb2 is speed is not good and has lot of problem

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
Those of you who think it will be a replacement for eSATA should think again.
USB overheads won't make USB 3.0 any faster than SATA II, and SATA III (originally planned for this year) can't be far away at 6Gb/s.
-
Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
USB3 won't be achieving the top speed most of the time USB speeds are very inconsistent it's rated at 480MBPs but a lot of the time you don't even get a tenth of that.
It's still all about ethernet and SATA since they can maintain constant speeds and are evolving also.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
that should really speed up transfer rates through external drives at least !
USB 3.0 possible tranfer speeds would transfer a 27GB HD movie to a portable device in 70 seconds ! The same thing would take 15 minutes or more with HighSpeed USB (2.0) ! The SuperSpeed devices will use the same connectors and the same programming and device models as existing devices !
and it's all backwards compatible too !!

Nope, the new connection will be optical, so it won't use the same connectors or be backwards compatible. Whether it uses the same programming remains to be seen, but don't expect throughput to be very high if it does.

Re: USB 3.0 brings optical connection in 2008
maybe i was a little vague the way i wrote my post LYNX ! sorry m8 ! USB 3.0 will incorporate some serious new hardware in the form of fiber optic lines embedded in the connector alongside the current copper wiring. Since the basic structure of the connectors will remain the same, you’ll still be able to plug your USB 2.0 devices into USB 3.0 ports.
that's what i meant by backwards compatibility !

Fiber optic . . i like the speed, but hope the cables are flexible enough
