what is the best firewall for xp, one that doesnt take too much CPU memory but does the job.??
for me windows firewall is enough, but you can use Kerio.also see this link
http://www.firewallguide.com/software.htm
You don't say if you like to download so if it was my granny asking I's say Stop "N" Look or Commodo .
Search on here tho for others opinions , there's some great threads here .
thanks this helped alot.
zone alarm .. :)
For XP,you should try outpost http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/
if you want to enhance your security it would be best to use router/firewall to stop intrusions from internet and use recomended software firewalls to manage system and applications access to internet.
Ashampoo.FireWall.PRO
Define - best.
Look and stop is light. wouldnt really recommmend zonealarm even though i have it (its about average to high).
You could try a router and a program like net limiter ( which mointors all incomming and outgoings, all of which you can control and even limit how much bandwith is used). Its alot easier to keep track then zonealarm.
Good point . I was wondering what the definition of a good firewall was . Limit "every thing " from connecting or just the programs I pick ? I'v used programs that locked me down tighter than a nun's T'unc ,at what cost tho ?
Remember zapjb when we all sang the praises of look N stop and we could n't connect thru MSN .
sygate
I'd vote for ZoneAlarm too.
I think "Outpost Firewall".
agree with BLACKBIRD - ZoneAlarm Pro 2007 is the best (no 1 rated firewall) to use and it's doesn't take up resources ! if you can afford it and are rich you could get a hard-wired firewall from CISCO systems !
Shut up shut up ! I have my fingers in my ears . :D Wish it was that easy friend , does it work with Utorrent , can I play games or D/L movies ?
I know I can surf the net safely and my computer boots in 20 seconds again but at what cost ? I'm going to be a fringe player lamenting the fact ..... there's no good programs ? Just wondering not trying to break your balls . :)
For XP a recommend probably the best firewall Outpost..never have any problem with him...Zone alarm is pure crap IMO.
Comodo Firewall
Well i have used alot of firewalls and i seem to have stuck with ashampoo pro, its very neat pretty tight as firewalls go!
Sygate, because it works with Utorrent.
Sygate is best imo ;)
Ive used Zonealarm and it seems to work OK, but in my opinion it is very user unfriendly it has a very non standard windows interface.
So I am try Commodo !

My favorite used to be Kerio, till they got rid of (or changed) the free version. I'm using zonealarm right now, even though I do hate it. It has a huge number of bugs, including one that utlizes 100% of your CPU if you transfer too much P2P data, randomly. I'm going to have to try some new ones soon.
i have a router firewall and it works great, plus nod32 and symantec endpoint my comp is as clean as a baby's bottom :D
Actually I would say thet ZoneAlarm is pretty good,I would even risk to say it's one of the best if not the best, the firewall in Kaspersky Internet Security is also ok.
But well I heard that when you're using ZA you got higher ping in games but didn't check it since I have KiS :p
Hands down the best firewall around: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
They are giving away free professional licenses! Check it out! [Always been free though] ;)
Mcafee does it for me.
i use outpost which is pretty good
zonealarm is ok too but it gets annoying with so many warnings + i like the outpost interface better
There is no such thing as best firewall as whole. It is combination of hardware and software, along with the rule that you implement. Might want to look in IPTable/IPChan if you can or have a old machine that is obselete compared to todays standard. Then install linux on it and run it as console and use it as your defult RAN server.
For example I am using a P4 2.6ghz system with 2gb ram as my RAN server to filter and osf packets. It is also used to prioritize my packet header depending on the scheme I am using.
PS: but if you are using Windows then I suggest you look for a firewall that is at least ICSA certified. Don't waste your time with brandname (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm) as it will be BS.
outpost or kerio.
I use outpost and works very fine for me.
I think sygate!!!
people always say nero/mcafee use up too much ram/cpu, but if your system can handle it you won't even notice the difference, plus they're an all-in-one virus/firewall ;)
Online Armor.
This outfit-

-does leak-testing on firewalls; says O-A's default settings outstrip any other firewall, which puts it two slots ahead of Comodo, and, like Comodo, it's free.
I've been using it for a couple of months, and it's the bee's knees. :whistling
