i'm using norton, but which one is better, and which one has the option of blocking specific ips better, like the way peerguardian blocks mpaa or watever... i was told zonealarm is easier, but which one is the best?

abu_has_the_power, get Sygate Personal Firewall, IMO its the best.
Man, the problem with posting this question is that everyone has their own opinion. I personally prefer McAfee PERSONAL firewall, but I cannot stand McAfee Firewall, so... Personal adds a few things, and doesn't kill my internet connection :)
Hmm... Perhaps you failed to read his comment about peerguardian? Look at his original post, before calling people noobs. He's looking for something in addition to PeerGuardian.Quote:

krackhead i use sygate too, do you enter any advanced rules? I have a few i have been experimenting with. It's fun. And if you screw something up, oh well just enter "allow all" temporarily until you figure it out. I would not even consider another firewall besides sygate at the moment. The ip trace is invaluable for getting revenge on scanners and the like. Just block the whole range!
Yea, the advanced rules make Sygate more customizable... Another great thing about Sygate! :)
Small, Easy yet powerfull, and complelety free! :)
Where to start? :)
n00b yourself - PeerGuardian is installed into K++, but the PG-K++ module, while works in taking down connections instantly (still a problem in PG), the module only works for connections in & out of K++. If you use another P2P program as well, you'll still have to run PG or others as well otherwise you're not protected.Quote:

Before getting into your own heated argument, why not check that out with random nut yourself? <_<
Yes they are...Quote:

That's why so many millions swear by them for internet activity (not just P2P). After you see the 50th Messenger window offering you how to make Herbal Viagra or similar, you kinda get pissed off at it. That, and many other annoying reasons. :DQuote:

Nice :) But not everyone trusts ZDNet. Thing is that's too similar to an international CNet; and a lot of people know that site's reputation with downloads.
That explains the strong point & downfall of Sygate; Sygate is mostly for those who want something a bit more technical than at the current other firewalls. If you've got the time & patience to custom the rules, allowing entry etc then Sygate seems to be the best option (I don't use it, but I follow recommendations). But if you're someone who just wants a great firewall with the minimum of fuss (guilty as charged ;)), then the best AFAIK is ZoneAlarm Pro.Quote:

Hope that helps a bit :)
I prefer ZoneAlarmPro, but I'm a lazy knob.
ZA is easy and so far it's done the job.
If I wanted a high maintenence, hard to figure out program I'd get a wife.
i like sygate a lot but i uninstalled it and am trying zonealarm pro and i dont like it but i willl keep it on and see if i learn to love it :)
ok in my opinion Zone Alarm is better than Norton..
But the best firewall is Sygate
ZoneAlarm & Sygate have better reputations for firewalls than Norton & McAfee, and there's a simple reason for it - Firewalls are not anti-viruses.Quote:

Norton & McAfee are well-known for being some of the best antiviruses available (others can be arguably better, but forget about that right now - it isn't the point). The fact is that the ones which do the best jobs are those which stick to what they're good at - AFAIK Symantec started out its early years with an Antivirus and have stuck at it, and now the Antivirus is the most popular in the Norton range.
Probably the same with McAfee, but IMO both should just stick to one thing they specialise at and spend full-time developing it, because IMO they aren't doing it for firewalls and are being surpassed by ZoneAlarm & Sygate.
Sometimes specialisation is the key to effectiveness rather than diversity - Look at Yahoo to see what I mean ;)
A firewall is only good if it protects you and lets you use apps. if you get a firewall and it dont let you do something, because it blocked it, then its no good, so there is no good or bad firewall. chose for your self, as there is only 1 good onefor you.
I read that zonealarm had some known vulnerability, since the article was written I think it was fixed and I also think it was the free version anyway(the paid versions supposedly didn't have it). Sygate is hard to configure but as they say, I you can't hang with the big dogs...... hehe ......stay on the porch.
It passes the time that's my point. ;)
ok
i'll check out sygate, but how do u add the ips that u want to block. for zonealarm, theres that xml thing where u copy and paste. but how do u do it for sygate. by ips, i mean like how peerguardian blocks out mpaa and riaa, and zonealarm can import the ips. but i'm not sure how to do it with sygate
I recommend downloading Norton Personal Firewall off Download.com or Kazaa Lite and then getting a crack off a website for it....its a very good program. I dont think Zone Alarm is a good enough firewall. Go with Norton, I have the virus protecter and the firewall. :)
Abu I don't wanna spam the software forum(the forum is crazy tonight imho) so I'll give one final answer for the moment. I use soulseek and I don't share with people who are not on my list. There is little danger of the riaa because my list is small. I don't use kazaa as much as I use soulseek. When I do, I don't bother to protect myself from the riaa, I'm only concerned about hackers. I have no earthly idea how to use peer gaurdian with sygate, I have never used peer gaurdian at all. Is there a way to block ip's? Yeah but better let someone else tell you as sygate makes my head spin. If I didn't mess with it for just one month I would probably forget all the settings and such(it can get complicated).
to darkblizzard: i used to have norton personal firewall. but then i was told that zonealarm and sygate were better. now i'm using zonealarm, and it's pretty good so far. and then people tell me sygate is better, but i didn't try it yet
the best firewall is Syamantec Client Firewall Corp. Ed. 5.0.1
extremely small and effective, and no expiration
the best, hands down
Dunno about your computer but I can sum up NAV & NPF in two wordsQuote:

NAV - Superb Antivirus :)
NPF - Resource Hog :(
And I'm talking about a 2.63 Ghz PC here
