How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
i have a bunch of shit hddvd and bluray rips @ 720p and 1080p
i want to hook my laptop up to my friends plasma.
my laptop has:
-svideo out
-vga out
i'm thinking i should use svideo right?
would the colors and everything look ok?
also, i'm not really sure what to do about audio. he has a panasonic 5 disk/ home theater setup. i have an external creative audigy 2 NX with spdif in/out
should i use that?

If his tv has a vga connection (and any half decent plasma should have) then just use your vga port, as it will give a clearer signal. Otherwise throw the s-video from your laptop into the tv. For the sound just stick a digital cord between your spdif port and the amp.
Just to note, set your laptop volume to around halfwayish so you dont get any hissing when you trun up the volume on the amp.

thanks
so vga will look better than svideo?
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
Yes, s-video is the older brother of scart, and as such isn't great for signals. The same way vga is older than DVI. But vga is higher quality than s-video, provided your using a resonable lead and its not being extended and such.
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
You won't get HD output on svideo, the composite channel simply doesn't have enough bandwidth. That's why newer cards have hdmi output, although some cards have a combined port which can be used directly for svideo or with an adapter for component out.
I assume you laptop doesn't have the combined port, so you need to use VGA for higher resolutions.

I use my S-Video off the back of my Video card and convert to component
and get up to 1920x1080 or 1080i. on my 43" TV. A very nice picture when watching hddvd and bluray rips @ 720p and 1080p

that is not svideo-to-component.

that is not svideo-to-component.
S-video uses the outer 4 pins of the connector on graphics cards.
The other pins (usually 3) on the extended port are vendor specific.
On some older cards 2 of these pins carried a composite video signal (the third was unused).
Newer cards use the three pins (and ground from one of the other 4 pins) to carry component signals (Y-Pb-Pr).
So while you are technically correct that it is not s-video to component, it is component output using the extended s-video port.
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
So it looks like S-video but it's really component?
what is the proper name for the output?
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
so if i use vga, which i'm pretty sure his plasma has input for, i can get up to 1080i res?
excited
does this mean i have to buy a vga male-vga female cable?
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
Well that depends on your cennections, if your laptop is male and the tv female then yes, if not then no.

It is an extended svideo port, though I don't believe it has an official name.
A standard 4-pin svideo plug can be inserted to use svideo signals. Alternatively an adapter can be inserted to use the other pins.
You can only get so many ports on the end of the card, so it makes sense to combine them when possible.
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
s-video max resolution is 480i. you cannot display HD content thru s-video. you'll have to use DVI, VGA, or HDMI. in matt526's case, the video card has a specialized port that only looks like s-video but splits off into component with that adapter. i'm not sure what the correct name for it is.
Re: How to play HD x264 movie from laptop onto 60' Plasma?
I just set up my 50 inch hdtv as a second monitor and I love it! HD x264 looks great and even the standard definition looks pretty good.
Media player classic is my favorite player, there is a nice codec pack that comes with it that can be downloaded here.
I have hdmi inputs on the teli so I used a dvi to hdmi converter and an hdmi cable.
This site has great prices on cables of any lengths.
