Re: Suggest a DVD player.
get one that upscales too it will be worth it
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
Philips DVP5140/37 - $54.99
If you have an HDTV (or planning to get one), then I'd suggest that you get...
Philips DVP5982/37 (1080p upconversion + HDMI) - $69.99
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
Philips DVP5140/37 - $54.99 ( as stated above)
I have this one and its cheap and very good for xvids. One of my best buys.
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
bought the philips and should arrive at my house tomorrow. It's for my mother. I know she's not going HD anytime soon so upscaling won't be neccessary. Thanks for the input guys, I'll let you know how it turns out, :)
BTW, for the xvid functionality can I just durn the xvids to a dvd/cd as a data file and stick it in?? What type of containers does it split??
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
Just stick any divx/xvid files onto a data disk. You can use CD but I've found problems in the past because of the low transfer rate, so probably best to stick to DVD.
Or use a USB memory stick or external HDD, formatted as FAT32.

He can't use USB cuz he's getting the inferior player.:ermm:
@mbucari
The DVP5982/37 was a much better deal since it had USB and virtually eliminated the need for burning anything.
I have the one before it that upconverts to 1080i and the greatest feature is being able to pop in a USB key with a movie or TV show and watch.
For the extra $15 you get the USB and HDTV upconvert ability.
Your mother will have to burn everything she wants to watch outside of normal DVDs vs. sticking in a key.

The information was interesting, but I wasn't planning on using it. I have managed (somehow) to pound into her brain the procedure for burning a DVD/CD. It' would take forever to get her to learn how to transfer with a flash drive / HDD. You'd think it would be simple, but my mother is dense when it comes to computers. And as if that wasn't enough (which it is), she doesn't have a flash drive. I don't feel like spending $15 extra on the player and $30 on a 2GB flash drive which can only play 1 movie.

Mmk, whatever you feel is easier for yer mom.
Me personally? I bought the flash drive, I get a film, I move the file over to the drive, 2 minutes, done.
To each his own.

IO appreciate that, but I think I'll stick with that one for her.
Though I'll consider it for personal use :)
Though, will have to format ext. HDD to fat32 :(

Well that's a timesaver if you have a lot of movies on ext hard drive.
Hell I have over 1TB of movies but still use my USB keys. The hard drives were formatted NTFS.
My new 500GB will be formatted FAT32 but I'll have to use short titles.
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
does the Phillips DVP5982 1080p also work on a non hdtv ? ;)
The usb utility sounds interesting
Re: Suggest a DVD player.

Of course.
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
OH CRAP I just bought my inlaws the DVP5140 but after reading this I am going to get myself the 5982 asap!!. I need a new one soon anyway
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
ive had experience with several divx/xvid enabled players and the one that i have found plays every file (without fail) is the magnavox mwd 7006.
this is actually the cheapest divx/xvid player on the market but it is the only one that i can personally guarantee to seamlessly play all of your xvid/divx content. i have tried the phillips and the toshiba models and they have both disappointed.
the magnavox does not have any fancy bells and whistles but as i mentioned the reliability is rock solid in the fact that it WILL without a doubt play your divx/xvid content
here it is... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=4810681

I dont have hdtv, but the usb feature seems appealing. No need to burn to discs, unless ofcourse you want to keep it for a collection.
Re: Suggest a DVD player.
I was sold on the USB idea, does anyone know if it would work with an external USB hard drive too???

Re: Suggest a DVD player.
Why would it have to be formatted as FAT32 ?
