New whatcd invite system info

posted on 12/19/07 12:44PM by **** We had a bit of an issue with the invite granting system (it handed out dozens of invites, seemingly arbitrarily, to anyone - including ordinary users, peons, and people who have had their invites disabled). Since the default invite giving system was a complete mess, it was basically impossible to pinpoint where the problem lay - there were far too many stupid sections of code that made little to no sense whatsoever. As a result, we decided to do the following:

1. Reset the number of invites for users, peons, and people who have had their invites disabled to 0.
2. Reset the number of invites for power users with more than 2 invites to 2.
3. Backport the planned invite system for gazelle over to the current site.

I did all 3 of them in a couple hours. This is how the new invite system works:

Power users (and above) get invites twice per month based off how much they uploaded and downloaded during the two weeks.

1 invites is given for 5 gigs uploaded and 5 gigs downloaded.
2 invites are given for 10 gigs uploaded and 10 gigs downloaded.
3 invites are given for 20 gigs uploaded and 20 gigs downloaded.

No more than 3 invites are given out per user per invite round, so uploading/downloading 50 gigs does not give you 8 invites. Invites will be given out on the 8th and the 22nd of every month.

Also, in case some people haven't noticed, donors now get access to the top 10. So if you don't think you have the bandwidth to become a power user, you may access the top 10 by donating. http://what.cd/pic/smilies/smile1.gif



that also mean no more unlimited invites for some users that said they have:P

I think it's a great idea if they want to choke the site's growth.

If that's not what they're aiming for, I think it's terrible. But I dislike most of the decisions they seem to be making these days.

but they had a certain date to give the invites

That's true. But it was plain and simple. PU+ = invites.

Now at What, it's you have to d/l and u/l atleast 5 gigs to get invites.

Not exactly the same...

i like new invites system i mean why it was changed,but i dont like that u need to download or upload 5GB to get invite..im sure it will be changed in future

Yeah, this invite system is better than the other =)

unless you have some new and intriguing content it is almost impossible to keep your ratio up on there :(...

This sucks......I had 14 invites now I only got 6 left

From 8 invites to two it's a clear message to me that the site owners saying they have enough members and want to slow down it's growth as it is quite successful now the very large selection of music is great in such a small period of time i would have never imagined such a rapid growth the amount of torrents in this time WOW i must say job well done

lol try to have that many invites on some others tracker..yea u will have none or max 2..be happy what u have:)

great move from the staff there to get private as we deserver , limited invites make the site very good for all :D

They make some changes to the invite system yet again.

The invites system has been changed again. Now power users get one invite on the 8th of every month - on top of the current system (so if you uploaded 5 gigs and downloaded 5 gigs between the 22nd and the 8th, you get two invites on the 8th). Furthermore, users get two invites on promotion to power user. You can't have more than 5 invites at a time.

Had 10 invites and now i have only 2 but l like this new invite system,you now have to think hard about who you invite.

This change is crap I had 9 and was looking to distribute at least half of them to people I know now that my computer's back online and functioning.

this new system suck (for me) i ain't download that much in 2 weekds...

More strictly invite rules means the tracker have a chance to go up to a higher level and for the community itself, it'll have a very selected ppl there.

does anyone have any invites left for what?? I got stripped of mine n I had 6 left

The latest amendment to the system makes it spot on in my book......fair & not giving some users silly numbers of invites

thing i dont like is the fact you have to leech to get invites ? what the ...thats rediculous..

i must admit i like this system to the older one :D

This invite system sucks. They blatanly copied waffles which i'm unimpressed with as well. It will stunt the growth what had going for itself. I still like What better though. Oh well...
