I heard that a few days ago there were around 500 arrest done to Kazza users. For violating copyright laws. Is this true? Has any one else heard this? I know they can't possibly arrest every single person. However I think they might be trying to set an example.

No one's ever been arrested for using a p2p program. And after they get the IPs, then they have to bully the ISP into giving over the information associated with the IP. (Unless they own it, like AOL) Once they get that info, they can then send a letter to the person demanding megabucks.

Also I imagine if you don't live in the US, this may not have to much impact on you, though Australia and the UK seem to be just behind the US in these matters.

It is a criminal matter if it is for commercial gain. However it will only be dealt with criminallly if it is of a substantial level and in the public interest.
Sharing and personal use is a civil matter. You cannot arrest people for a civil matter. Unless someone refuses to obey an interlocutor, then the offence would probably be contempt.

While it's true that this is completely a civil matter, don't think you cannot get in trouble if you live outside of the US. You're just fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
With the exception of very few countries, copyright laws are in existence virtually around the world. Why do you think the Sharman Networks(et al) is incorporated where they are?(a small island in the South Pacific)
Go to a local store, pickup a DVD, CD, tape, whatever. Does it have a copyright mark?(a small "c" within a circle, or a small "tm") Than you can get into trouble.

The RIAA has almost no case. They have to {PROVE} first of all, that you actually did share the file, and not just have it to provide backups of movies you've purchased (fair use law).
Then they have to explain how they {FOUND OUT} and since quite a bit of it is not exactly on the up an' up, they have a bit of 'splainin' to do.
The problem really is with government's like in the US, where democracy's been dead for a few years.

In Australia it's a criminal matter, they cant just subponea Isp's, In Australia they need the federal police to carry out a search warrent on the Isp thus criminality, but with Universitys Riaa is taking them to civil court to try and get names as they wont hand them over.
Thou this is still untested in Australian courts.
With movies(not a RIAA matter) it seems they are just issuing warnings.

Seems clear it is not stealing, its copyright infringement.
They have been offered many alternatives to fix this problem, and refused all.
They have chosen to turn this into a madhouse, and eventually congress will have to step in, just as they did when they wanted to shut down radio, they implemented Voluntary Collective Licensing. They've tried to shut down everthing else from betamax to some fucking piano almost 100 years ago.

The ISP is just the first in a long leagl process. This is a civil and not a criminal process which means until there is a convection in Civil Court, the party bringing the complaint has to pay all leagle costs (including the battle that providers give when it comes to giving up the names behind the ISPs). As we are really talking mega bucks, befor you panic, you should wait and see how the first court cases turn out. If you are living in Europe (contenial Europe that is) you have no worries at all at the present times. For example in Germany, even when they can trace Kiddie Porn to a specific ISP, they still have to get approval from a Judge to conduct FURTHER investigations against the sicko, and that is for a major Crimal Complaint. So Civil Complaints based on ISP addresses have never been attempted in Germany as yet.
