i'm getting a comp with these specs:
INTEL P4 2.4GHZ [800FSB] CPU
- Intel 865PE chip 800FSB 8x AGP Main Board with Sound / USB2.0 / 10/100 LAN
- 512MB Dual Channel DDR400 Memory
- 120GB 7200 RPM ATA-100 HDD
- 128MB GeForce FX 5200 8x AGP Video
- 5.1 Channel 3D Surround Sound
- 480 Watts PMPO Subwoofer Speakers
- 10/100 Network LAN
would it be able to play doom 3, half life 2, and academy?
JUST CHANGE THE Geforce FX 5200 to a Radeon 9800 Pro
And you are ready to go!

If you cannot afford the higher priced gpu's go for the mid range, not the budget models. The mid range Nvidia cards work great, i just bought a MSI FX5600 VTDR for (Australian) $350. Which equates to about $200 american but most FX5600 are around US$150 and are approximately the 7th best graphics card around for the average consumer.
And if you can afford it, go ultra FX as they are much faster.

Buddy, you're looking at the wrong games then, I hate to tell you. If you want a system that'll play those games, don't do it half-assed.
the 5200 wont run doom3 for shit, according to carmack, and most doom3 stories, for one, you will need a directx 9 card for it, for the most part, and the 5200 is a half assed dx9 card, meaning, yes it supports it, but only with shitty fps, and low resolutions.
Half life 2, you should be fine for that, as the hl2 engine is scalable, and they have stated it will even run on tnt2s, geforce 3, etc, just not great.
Jedi academy, i dunno. I run the beta pefectly fine with my geforce 4200.
Get that. It compares well to the 9700 but for about half the price of the 9700. But the problem is that the 9500 Pro is retired. If you don't want to get that, I suggest that you get the 9600 Pro. The 9600 Pro is the first radeon card to use a 0.13 Micron chip, making it comparable to some top-of-the-line cards.Quote:

That PC is fine if you want to play Half-Life and Doom 3 at low graphix config, if you don't care about the graphix GO FOR IT...

It is a good deal, but if you care about playing top games, then you should get a better videocard. The 5200 Ultra just doesn't meet the standards of the games you listed. Try something like a Radeon 9600 Pro or a 9500 Pro, or a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra.Quote:

ok, thanks people. if i set the video settings to medium or low, would i still be able to play? like i said, i'm not looking 4 top notch graphics, just one enough to play the game without any problems. i'm sure vice city would run perfectly on this comp, rite? and i'm sure ut2k3 and some of the other new fps would work on this comp pretty well.

If you heard, numbers don't really tell you much now. 3DMark found out that the 5900 was rigged so that it can do well in the 3DMark2003 benchmarking program. ATI's was also rigged, but when 3DMark released a patch that fixes the riggs, the stats show that the 9800Pro actually does well compared to the 5900 Ultra.Quote:

I have the GeforceFX5200ultra, and I don't studer a bit, but I do have about a gig of ddr ram, ? anyway ain't nothin wrong with a 128ddr gfx card, more is better but this aint bad..
